Overshadowed by controversy and massive egoThis feels less like an exploration of a breaking point and rebellion and more like an opportunity to serve the director's ego. Historical facts are played down or altered to make Turner less of a troubled mind and more of a pure hero aware of his future historical reputation. Turner, while famously eloquent and intelligent, was also somewhat insane believing god was talking to him through natural phenomenon. Women and children were not spared in his rampage and he did not simply turn himself in to save lives, he was caught hiding out by a farm. All of the vain flourishes distracts from the more complicated real life man and his revolt. It cheapens the lives lost black and white. It often appears manipulative and staged. There are some smart and effective shots and everyone is definitely giving it their all, but it's hard to not feel that the final product is also exploitive...ending in one of the cheesiest angel from heaven effects committed to film..Fletch F. InspiringThis movie is an inspiration of hope for any who are the victims of oppression and inequality. It captured the essence of the disparity of those times which eventually lead to slave uprisings. I could not help but think of Patrick Henry's declaration "Give me liberty or give me death" during the American fight for independence ". Have yet toHave had this on pre order for weeks now still waiting. If I risk being shamed for supporting this movie based on the man who carried the story, I'll show my support every other way. Overdone and over the topI just finished watching Birth of a Nation (not the original but the 2016 movie of the same title) on a plane. It tries to be Glory by reproducing a scene that Denzel Washington indelibly etched into the very fabric of filmdom. It tries to be 12 Years a Slave but is pornographic in the depictions of cruelty and sadism of the white masters. It doesn't have the bloodthirsty finesse of Django (yup, Django). And its homage to Roots is trite. Like all movies describing crimes against humanity, sometimes a less volatile and deliberate touch is better.
