In Robert De Niro's stunning directorial debut, a devoted father battles a local crime boss for the life of his son. The most beautiful movie ever createdSo I'm going to begin this review with a question - do you waste your talents? It's a sad thing to have wasted talent. That's a lesson I learned from this movie. Chazz Palminteri taught me three things - don't waste your talent, learn from Machiavelli, and you only get three great girls in your life. This movie is a real coming-of-age story that still, to this day, relates to all young people. The characters really mature as the movie progresses, and the actors show emotion. And I'm not being biased because my mother and her family were extras in this movie. This movie shows that if you put your heart to it, you can be anything you want. It shows that you control your destiny, and it shows that even a mob boss can morally progress to a good man. At heart, this film is a tragedy, and Calogero is the tragic hero. And Palminteri's character, Sonny, is a deuteragonist turned protagonist. Sonny originally exploited the innocent Calogero as a child and taught him how to gamble, how to exploit people, and how to be a mobster. Then, as Calogero became older, he became a second father to Calogero, now in high school and in a controversial romance with a girl from Webster Avenue, the black neighborhood. Sonny taught Calogero how to find out if a woman is right for him, how to be reliable, and he saved Calogero's life, for which Calogero never got to thank Sonny due to divine intervention and the violent death of Sonny by assassination. By this point, Sonny's death is an emotional roller coaster, leaving the audience in tears because at this point, similar to Jean Valjean in Les Misérables, Sonny has morally progressed and was treating Calogero as his own child, giving him all the love a father could give. So, instead of demonizing an otherwise criminal person, this film idolizes the same type of character usually depicted as a violent lowlife and gives that character emotions and compassion. In conclusion, this film is amazing. The cast of this film is insanely talented and the characters make for an amazing storyline. Rating - 1,000,000/10.Score: 5/5
