Carrie Pilby Description

Carrie Pilby (Bel Powley) is a 19-year old genius, a year out of Harvard, and living in New York City. Burdened with an overactive moral compass in a world she considers to be populated by oversexed, deceitful hypocrites, Carrie finds herself isolated, friendless, dateless and unemployed. When Carrie’s absentee father (Gabriel Byrne) insists she get a roommate or a job, and her psychiatrist (Nathan Lane) makes a list of goals she is to achieve between Thanksgiving and the end of the year, Carrie resists the mundane until her goal-oriented brain forces her to embrace these tasks with a vengeance. Others who unwittingly help Carrie achieve her goals include Cy (William Moseley), her didgeridoo-playing musical prodigy neighbor; engaged and confused Matt (Jason Ritter) who sincerely believes that cheating will bring him clarity; Carrie’s former Harvard professor Harrison (Colin O’Donoghue), the genesis of everything Carrie hates; and new boss Tara (Vanessa Bayer), who convinces Carrie that it’s not her job to be the moral guardian of the human race. Against best efforts, Carrie evolves into the compassionate person she never knew she wanted to be in this unique and charming comedy.

Carrie Pilby Movie Reviews

  • A Must See If You Like Meg Ryan

I am a lover of all things great romantic comedies bring to the table. Now, that's not to say I love all movies that fall under that genre. I'm not a fan of many, in fact. This film, however, made it to the top of my "must see" list becuase of the character of Carrie. She was written with depth, confidence and grit which reminds me so much of the way Nora Ephron writes her female leads; each are written to be strong and real. Carrie has honest questions, understandale problems and is an undenyable hopless romantic; which, I love. I will watch this again and talk openly about my love for this movie.
  • Great film - just loved Carrie

This was a great surprise - I rented this movie having never heard of it and slightly interested after reading the description. So wasn't expecting much. The movie was really well done and you will fall in love with Carrie Pilby. She is sweet, quirky, opinionated and so likable. Well worth renting and watching with someone you love or even all alone. Don't miss this hidden treasure.
  • Cute 😏

It was just ok for me. Kind of dragged its way through. Love Nathan Lane wish he'd been in it more. 3 stars for the effort. Just didn't grab me ✌️
  • Very good

I liked the movie and appreciated seeing it from a young pedagogical point of view. I have often wondered how they felt being in a world beyond their maturity level. Just because they are smart, they are still kids. I liked the fact she and her father were able to meet. Don't want to ruin the ending, but it was more uplifting without being sappy, imo.
  • Worth renting

I rented this movie, out of boredom and was pleasantly surprised. It was a sweet, funny, charming movie!
  • dreadful

    awful predictable flat
  • Amusing and sweet

    Can't find a non-taken nickname
I enjoyed it. I think this movie is going to be very much a matter of personal taste. I can see why some people wouldn't like it, but I do. Carrie is insufferable but also sympathetic. I could relate to her, which is probably important in appreciating the movie. There's a little bit of suspension of disbelief required, because some elements are not particularly realistic, but that's true for most non-historical movies.
  • A sleeper

    Jerry in CO
Haven't enjoyed the film this much in quite some time it takes a while to get through probably the first half but then it really explains it all towards the end so glad we rented this one
  • Far more than expected

My wife and I settled on this movie. I'm so glad we did. It starts slowly, and Ms. Powley comes across as annoying initially. Don't be put off, the more you know her, the more you like her; and the more you believe in her character. Well written and paced. Too often we want quick joy, hurried satisfaction. This movie develops and provides emotion you can savor, carried along by the humor that so often underlays the tragedies of life. In the end, its revelations of relationship ring true. It's more than worth your time and your money.
