Ghost in the Shell Movie Reviews

  • Good SciFi

Has a really good SciFi (story). SciFi is not about special effects. Feels very much like the original blade runner in effects and the general state of the world.
  • Anime vs. Movie

First off let me take the time to write that the movie as a general was interesting and good. There could have definitely been improvements but we’ll save that for last. The atmosphere of the story was very good and if it was your first time experiencing the movie I could see this getting pretty good ratings. The characters were cast pretty well in my opinion, but there was inconsistencies there that I would like to point out. It’s action packed and really made you think about what it is to be your own person. Which is recognized more so in the movie than what the anime seemed to lean toward. Some improvements that I think could’ve been done was more scenery being shown of the world to really get a stronger feel of how the world was like. If you imagine Total Recalls environment, you’d get a pretty decent image of this world. Another improvement would have been having a Japanese/Asian actress. Don’t get me wrong I think Johansson definitely did well in the role. But there were inconsistencies in the story such as the younger major being Asian in the movie and an Asian mother. Pronunciations for names were noticeable as well. As somebody who watched the anime first and prefer it. This movie is still good and I definitely would recommend watching it. I recommend the anime’s as well if you want less drama and more into the plot line of the world itself. Both great. Watch both.
  • Beautiful But

This remake of the Japanese Anime from 1995 is beautifully made, Johansson is magnificent & VirtualAir is painting the most lovely 3D stuff ... BUT although they guys which made it say to closely stick to the origin - they totally miss the point. The End of the story signifies nothing less than the birth of a new digital hybrid race, which is why it was inspiring so many. In this remake such Android dreams are nowhere to be found, the end is altered & totally flat. I know it was Spielberg which bought the rights & is behind this. As much as I believe in giving directors some creative freedom - but not to the extent as to kill the very Ghost he should be portraying ! Sad sad, another Ghost-/soulless shiny Shell - Hollywood rerun. Pls make sure You watch the real One, after this it rocks ;-)
  • So Good

Much better than I was expecting. I thought the idea was interesting
  • Think for yourself

Disregard reviews comparing it to the anime/manga. It's not meant to be that. It delves into a compelling direction where it is completely original. The AI/consciousness argument of this version is so relevant to the future of biotechnology that the movie seems like somewhat of a warning more than fiction. The acting is compelling given the situation and the script. I find it laughable when people say Scarlett Johansson her acting was too robotic. She might seem distant at times, but it literally might be the role of playing a robot. I've watched it a few times and every time is different, and the discovery process is subtle and nuanced. Enjoy.
  • Too many special effects

The special effects attempted to compensate for the lack of a good plot. I like to watch movies before bed and my wife and I fell asleep in the middle of it.
  • This Movie Made Me Cry😭

This movie made me cry... because of the thought we aren't going to see another live action Ghost in the Shell movie anytime soon because of bad reviews. I absolutely love this movie! The special effects, story & yes, even the cast! People say this movie was a victim of being 'white-washed', but Scarlett Johansson was great in the movie! Look, if you've a fan of the anime, check out this movie. It might be the only &/or last live action interpretation of Ghost in the Shell...
  • Ghost fans will enjoy

Lots of Easter eggs and homages to the original. Johansson nails the role of Major with an excellent supporting cast.
  • I would pass on this movie

I'm a fan of almost all the movies of this kind. However, I lost interest very fast and it wasn't captivating. Very disappointing.
  • As a fan.....

For many who have seen the series, yes, it is different from the original. Sure some things could have been better like an r rated movie of it(freedom to use content not shown in the live adaptation), maybe replace the main actress due to race(no offense to scarlet), some scenes to give it more reflective questioning for the audience to have when they walk out of the theatre. BUT...for what it is worth, it's definitely a very close attempt of an anime adaptation. The way they used scarlets character in terms of the race issue (basically saying she was Asian , but replaced with scarlets body), the look and special effects are on point; and the actors Matched the characters and did a solid job. My only concern was the significance of this movie missed how powerful the subject matter really is. It just lacked that passion that made the anime so great. Great to rent . Not to buy
  • Ignore the Bad Reviews....Slick, Sexy and Thought Provoking!

Don't let the bad reviews keep you from watching this movie. I found it to be a slick, sexy, thought provoking movie. Enjoy this thrill ride for the way it is, on it's own merits. I truly enjoyed this. And don't really care about the book, or the animated version. I almost passed on it due to the negative reviews. I'm really glad I didn't. I instantly added it to my HD digital collection. And truly hope for a sequel. Scarlett was the perfect choice for this awesome flick, as well as the great supporting cast. Rent it and judge for yourself.
  • Come on, guys.

I haven't seen the anime version, but this is a great real life version. Kinda like the matrix, it rather strikes home the question "Has technology gone too far?" So really, watch it. Don't rent it, this is more of a onetime thing, but still.
  • Good rental

Worth renting but the plot and acting were just ok.
  • Transpersonal Rumination

Going in, I figured this movie wouldn’t be anymore interesting than a cartoon mess, but I did find myself drawn in by thoughts of transpersonal psychology, even if I didn’t always agree with the movie’s take, or feel engaged throughout, sometimes bored with this or that chase scene.
  • It was hella better than live action DBZ

It wasn't as bad most reviews says, if you never seen ghost in the shell. Then this movie will help you under stand the jest of it.The CGI and visually were good, it reminded me of fifth element stuff which was nice. Story could of been better, it slightly more SJW type of thing. But if you have a open mind about future tech and transfer minds and souls to a new body. You should be okay on that. The actors/ actresses they choose we're alright major and batou, for me was perfect.
  • itunes extras removed

Want to bring to your attention that the itunes extras is MISSING. There was a lot of nice stuff in there. I cannot access it all.
  • Great movie

Great movie overall but end didn’t pop great acting overall very well done
  • Pretty good CGI, poor acting

Movie is well made - excellent CGI. Scarlett seems to be struggling, not just with her character's identity, though. There MUST have been an actress available which would have given more life to the original character than her! No, her moodiness doesn't remind me of a ghost in a shell, but a shell of an actor. Did Lucy come back to haunt us? I mean, her mom's character actor did a better job. Next time, director should start shopping earlier, much earlier.
  • It Really Got Good at The End

    Rutherford Crenshaw
It was kind of slow paced like the Ghost in the Shell anime, but I really ended up enjoying the message at the end.
  • A worthy inclusion

I've seen all video media and read a bunch of the manga that take place in this universe, so far my favorite is S.A.C. That's to let you know where I'm coming from on this. I found this chapter to be very enjoyable, well done and respectful of the source material(s). The plural here is because every incarnation of the stories in GITS contain felements missing from other ones or that sometimes conflict. This is not a hang-up for me. I like being plopped-down into this world for a slice of 'a day in the life' There are so many echoes in this movie that show it was created by people who are fans of the other incarnations. They even went so far as to have Takeshi not deal with speaking english. For a movie targeting an american audience, that's unusual. The supporting case is great. Batou is a stand-out. Togusa is perfect...though they should have had him dye the hair (my 2 cents). If they were to make a series of these of a similar level of quality, I'd be at the front of the line to watch them.
