King Arthur: Legend of the Sword Description

Acclaimed filmmaker Guy Ritchie brings his dynamic style to the epic fantasy action adventure “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.” Starring Charlie Hunnam in the title role, the film is an iconoclastic take on the classic Excalibur myth, tracing Arthur’s journey from the streets to the throne. When the child Arthur’s father is murdered, Vortigern (Jude Law), Arthur’s uncle, seizes the crown. Robbed of his birthright and with no idea who he truly is, Arthur comes up the hard way in the back alleys of the city. But once he pulls the sword from the stone, his life is turned upside down and he is forced to acknowledge his true legacy…whether he likes it or not.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword Movie Reviews

  • What the HELL is wrong with critics?!

I rarely, if ever, write reviews. Here's what I think & you should too: see those 4 rotten reviews above? They're complete BS. This movie won't be up there with Lord of the Rings, but come on! It's really fun. I'm glad I watched it and liked it so much that I bought it.

Thoroughly enjoyed this take on the story/beginnings of Arthur. Visuals were fantastic and directing worked expertly. Wish I watched this in theaters, highly recommend this movie!

I'm a huge shakespearean fan and this fails badly on so many levels 🤦🏻‍♀️

Loved this, really great despite the abrupt cuts you have to expect given the director.

I have no idea how the critics got it sooo wrong. It was one of the greatest films I’ve ever seen. So smartly executed
  • Missing something ( a lot)

Love Guy Ritchie, but with the exception of one or two scenes the movie felt extremely flat. I’m open to the new tone, but would have been cooler if Jude Law’s character looked human (but with powers) than some demon. Arthur’s journey at some point in the movie felt extremely pointless. The beginning of the film showing Arthur as a young man was pretty drawn out and once again pointless for plot development. A lot of pointless with poor plot development, some cool and emotional scenes (all on Jude Law’s Vortigern side) and some typical Guy Ritchie banter/camera work.

  • Critics Schmitics! Don't listen to them!

This movie was really good! The critics have lost their sense of imagination and don't allow for room for originality in retellings- since most of what we do now are repeats. If you're hoping this is like the stories of King Arthur, then you may not like this either. However, if you are open to a retelling of King Arthur and have a love of dark fantasies, then this is definitely your movie.

Movie was great but David Beckham ruined it for me. I was taken out of a great movie and focused on such bad casting. Surely when this movie was finished the producers could see he was wrong for the part and they should have re cast it. A scene that lasted a minute really impacted an otherwise brilliant film.
  • Terrific movie!

I can't believe I waited so long to watch this movie. Great action sequences, the plot was interesting and riveting. I'm thinking maybe the critics don't like Guy Ritchies style. Having watched some of his other movies such as Snatch and Smokin' barrels I really enjoy the way he weaves different conversations and events until they culminate. Maybe not for everyone, but I thought he did the King Arthur name good.
  • Entertaining but Lacking Originality in Dialogue

Working within the Industry building prop's n costumes gives me a different perspective on films. To much of the dialogue was a spin off of the TNT series Will. This film doesn't have the sly humor n character quirks that show delivers. I loved the armor but again, historically, Vortigern's family crest is a White Dragon, so the black felt like a cheap attempt to point out the villain. The armor spanned 500AD-1500's so there was a lot of variation. Also, the introduction of Mordred prior to Arthur's birth felt wrong to me. He was Arthur's son and a Druid, causing Arthur's eventual death as Christianity and Goddess worship fought each other throughout the British Isles. The sword play and weapons were awesome. The bladesmith that produced Excalibur created a beautiful blade. The most visually stunning effect was the underwater Lady of the Lake sequence. I would have liked more of those moments in the film. Overall I enjoyed it but I wouldn't buy it. It's not something I would watch over again.

Just finished watching the movie with my two teenage sons and had a blast. Seriously upset that I let movie critics influence me into not seeing the movie when it originally released. The movie is awesome with a great soundtrack.
  • Weak Story/Constant flashbacks

This movie was done in a sense where there is constance flashbacks again and again. Idk what the director was thinking. The story is weak and the movie can be dull through most parts. The constant flashbacks takes away from the focus of the story and the acting is cheesy and hard to watch at times.

A movie built around a truth as old as mankind. If someone doesn't stand up and fight evil, then that is all it takes for an evil king to come to power. Nobility is the central theme and it is entertaining to watch the protagonist's journey towards accepting it within himself. Even if you don't believe in the Arthurian legends, the screen play is well written, acted and directed. The production values are high. The mise en scène is earthy tones with magical effects done right. A gritty superhero version of Arthur that has not been done before.
