Ingrid Thorburn (Aubrey Plaza) is an unstable young woman with a checkered past of obsessive behavior. She secretly moves to Los Angeles to befriend Taylor Sloane (Elizabeth Olsen) — an Instagram "influencer" with a fabulous artist boyfriend, a camera-ready terrier, and an array of new products and brands to promote to her followers. After Ingrid adopts a Taylor-made identity for herself, her attempts to prove she's BFF material are underway — that is, until she meets Taylor's obnoxious brother Nicky, who threatens to tear down her façade. Also starring O'Shea Jackson Jr., Ingrid Goes West is a savagely hilarious dark comedy that brilliantly satirizes the modern world of social media and proves that being #perfect isn't all it's cracked up to be.
She'll follow you.. Ingrid becomes obsessed with a social network star named Taylor Sloane who seemingly has a perfect life. But when Ingrid decides to drop everything and move west to be Taylor's friend, her behaviour turns unsettling and dangerous.. Ingrid Goes West Wiki
This movie is actually very smart compared to vapid people it portrays. Aubrey Plaza and Elizabeth Olsen's acting is what really saves this movie. How do I put it, you either really like this movie or you don't. There is no inbetween on this one. This movie is a genius commentary on our society's social media usage today and how toxic it can be to someone's well being. Ingrid Thorburn is a mentally unstable woman who places social media on a high pedestal to how she models her life. She becomes obsessed with Taylor Sloane who feels like any Instagram influencer you can find today. The plot basically follows Ingrid slow decent into madness with her social media obsession with being BFFs with Taylor Sloane. In the end Ingrid ends up getting her own following by posting her failed suicide attempt. So she finally gets the validation that she was looking for in the end even if it came at the almost cost of her life. I liked this movie because it really did show how dependent some people have become getting their life validations from social media and how everything isn’t always what it seems like it is online. Elizabeth Olsen is very convincing playing a shallow Instagram influencer. Aubrey Plaza plays crazy just well enough to be likeable in the end. Like I said you either gonna love the message it sends or you’re gonna hate it because it doesn’t really follow a cookie cutter Hollywood story.
A dark yet comedic film, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Aubrey Plaza's awesome performance made me laugh, cry , and cringe (but in the best of ways). Elizabeth Olsen's portray of your typical "California girl" was extremely accurate. The movie definitely caused me to think about the presence of social media in today's society, while still being light-hearted and funny. The twist and gripping last scene of the film was a feat of its own. It was definitely worth the watch.
Obsession in social media is without a doubt growing faster than I think anyone expect. Having said that- I can not believe this movie 🎥 glorifies trying to commit suicide on the web for a group of followers. Even though it’s not done for that reason- I find this disturbing since so many ppl are obsessive about looks, ppl they know, clothes, celebs etc and so on. This flick has absolutely no reasoning to the plot except to showcase a mentally disturbed young girl and try to make a comedy of it. How irresponsible to put this out without showing the true consequences and only getting what she wanted- totally whacked. Don’t let your kids watch this. I don’t recommend it to anyone who’s even the slightest off balance. Absolutely terrible 👎. And shame on the producers, writers and cast 📱
It’s more of the genre of satire and requires some social understanding to appreciate this movie.
I would rarely take the time to watch a movie with this premise; because I am too old for social media at real time. But the reason why I decided to watch was because of the star who I have seen in a couple of roles. She is a shining star. I think that her abilities are just becoming. Overall the film was a ‘B’ movie with little besides her acting within a stress level of slow rising as you feel her strange obsession. If you have OCD you will find more depth than the overall film provides. Love seeing cool new actors make any story better.
Loved this movie. Shines a spotlight on today’s truth. It’s funny, it’s touching, it’s raw. Well worth watching 👍📱😎
It’s a great film sometimes it has you laughing and sometimes it has you crying
Maybe other people will like this film, but it wasn't to my taste. Too dark. Very insane person doing very insane things, and ... that's pretty much it. I had to stop after 30 minutes. I'm not sure what the point is of continuing to watch, other than to gawk at the train wreck that was sure to come.
A total, complete, absolute waste of time. Supposedly a comedy, there was nothing even slightly funny about this film. The lead character is a messed up psycho and liar who needs help. I will not be trusting iTunes Movie of the Week or Rotten Tomatoes reviews ever again
START: a character who struggles with a social media problem FINISH: a director who conveys a dangerous message about creating suicide videos for fame Wrong message to go to our young people right now. SHAME ON YOU!!!!
