Legendary comedian Gilbert Gottfried has had quite the career. Rocketing to fame in the 1980's, he was thrust into public consciousness thanks to his brash personality and off-kilter comic timing. Now, foul-mouthed and unapologetic after decades of flying solo in both his work and in his personal life, Gilbert has shockingly reinvented himself…as a family man. Director Neil Berkeley’s "Gilbert" reveals an unexpected side to the iconic comedian. The film peeks behind the larger-than-life persona at a more personal story about growing up in Brooklyn and becoming a husband and father late in life. Gottfried’s ability to bring humor to even the darkest situations has, at times, gotten him into trouble. Still he soldiers on, an expert craftsman at bringing his audience to the edge (and sometimes pushing them over). Gilbert strips the comedic character away to reveal the man behind it. Berkeley allows the audience an intimate — even vulnerable — view of Gottfried out of character.
The life and career of one of comedy's most inimitable modern voices, Mr. Gilbert Gottfried.

The Wizard of Guff-aws...I had heard the buzz about this film & watched the promos but did not have a chance to view it until it became available here on iTunes. I am by no means a huge fan of Gilbert Gottfried (although his 'Amazing Colossal Podcast' is a must hear for fans of the Golden Age of Hollywood) but having said that, this documentary is not a recounting of his career, per se. It is rather a look behind the curtain at the very private person who pilots the outrageous public character we are all familiar with. I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it not only to dehard fans of Mr. Gottfried but to anyone who wants to get a glimpse of one comedian's reality. Congratulations to director Neil Berkley, Dara & Gilbert Gottfried and everyone involved in the production of this film. Take 5 well-deserved stars from this unknown, yet grateful reviewer!.Score: 5/5

Don't miss it if you love comedyI'm cheap, like Gilbert, so I rented it. The film shows the unglamorous underbelly of road comedy, and that lifestyle is depressing, especially because it takes Gilbert away from his beautiful and loving wife and kids. The star of the family is clearly St. Dara, Gilbert's wife. She should be inducted into the Wife Hall of Fame. She is an incredible human. I met Gilbert last year at a comedy club in the Midwest and he killed it. But I worry about him because he looked frail. I think his young family and the incredible podcast ("Gilbert Gottfried's Amazing Colossal Podcast") are adding years to his life. I refuse to label it (it's produced by Dara and his on air partner, Frank Santopadre) a "nostalgia" show because preserving 20th century entertainment is too important to be called that. Gilbert is an all time Top 5 comic, author, actor, voice artist and voice of a podcast that is downloaded more than a million times a month, and it was a thrill to finally see his life on the screen. The thought of this doc being nominated for an Academy Award, and winning, and watching Gilbert's acceptance speech is this fan's fantasy, a dream which could come true for his comedy hero. This is great work of the documentary craft in that this film could’ve gone on for twice as long and it still would’ve seemed that time flew while watching it. Enjoyed every minute of GILBERT. Very TouchingAdmittedly I don't like his jokes. Never have and never will. However, I like him. I have always looked at Gilbert and seen a man standing alone in a crowd, unable to express how much he likes people. That is who Gilbert is, a man overflowing with emotion for others who struggles with how to demonstrate that. He is wonderful with his children, and is very fortunate with the wife he won. With life's hard times and difficult moments, he reaches into himself for his life raft on how to deal with it. That's his way, like it or not. He's honest. Decades ago when I was watching an episode of M.A.S.H. Hawkeye was asked why he joked about everything when in the middle of a war, and he replied it was how he kept sane when surrounded by insanity. Gilbert is a little like that. I was moved to tears more than once whilst watching this. This film is very insightful and I highly recommend it. After watching this, I googled his sister Arlene and learned that she did not survive her cancer. Gilbert was a devoted and loving brother to her; he's tops..Score: 5/5
