In 2003, thirty years after they served together in the Vietnam War, former Navy Corps medic Larry "Doc" Shepherd reunites with former marines Sal Nealon and Reverend Richard Mueller on a different type of mission: burying Doc’s son, a young marine killed in the Iraq War. Doc decides to forgo burial at Arlington National Cemetery and, with the help of his old buddies, takes the casket on a bittersweet trip up the East Coast to his home in suburban New Hampshire. Along the way, Doc, Sal, and Mueller reminisce and come to terms with shared memories of the war that continues to shape their lives. Based on the novel by Darryl Ponicsan.

The Last Detail, twenty years laterThis is a film that, to me, does not require or prompt an analytical review. Cranston, Fishburne and Carell are perfectly cast. I cannot imagine a threesome who could better play these characters. While reimagined as two marines and a navy corpsman, this does an excellent job of following up the original film from the early seventies, and it is a better film. I am glad when a comic actor can cross over to serious roles. With Carell I did not miss the comedy, nor did I expect it. He played the role in an understated way that worked really well. Plus, Cranston did an excellent job in the former Nicholson role. Beyond this, the appearance of the amazing Cicely Tyson is an absolute treat. My recommendation? It is a bit of an edgy grinder (thanks to Cranston's Nealon) but it pays off. I don't know about audiences who are older or younger than me, but I was from the Vietnam generation and it certainly works wellf or me..Score: 5/5
Kyokushin Osu Seal of ApprovalThis movie gets the Kyokushin Osu seal of approval. Excellent character acting by Carell, Cranston, and Fishburne. While on the road with the coffin of Carell's deceased son, the actors transport you to their own Lost Highway of pain and loss, while simultaneously uplifting you with their humor. The shared experience of Vietnam unites them and gives meaning to the background theme of profound loss. There is redemption in the end. And laughter punctuates the journey. This is not the saccharine "Dulce et Decorum Est" -- but rather, the deep knowledge that we have our brothers to depend on, and the ultimate sacrifice does have meaning. After a long wait I expected moreNow I understand why this movie wasn’t a bigger hit at the box office. The pacing was off for a movie with a terrific cast and storyline. Could have been so much better with some creative editing and a better soundtrack. Maybe it didn’t have the budget for that. Either way Bryan Cranston is the real bright spot in this movie..Score: 3/5
Boring and ClicheThis film is neither entertaining nor insightful. It is 2 hours of straight dialogue, and the characters are Hollywood cliches, rather than authentic human beings. If you're looking for a respectful, honest film about fallen Marines, watch Taking Chance. If you're looking for 2 hours of the same old Hollywood anti-war speeches, watch this one..Score: 1/5
