Winter 1997. Amarillo, Texas. Brian Deneke is known for his green mohawk and undying passion for punk music. He throws punk shows with his friends at a rundown venue known as “Bomb City. ” And Brian, along with many of his fellow “punks, ” refuses to conform to the conservative culture that surrounds them. Their radical appearances stir social intolerance within the community, particularly with Cody Cates, a high school jock who assimilates to a pack known as “white-hatters. ” After losing a football game, Cody and a few other white-hatters have an altercation with several of the punks. This conflict ignites a series of hostile encounters between the two groups, climaxing one evening with a horrific, violent street fight. The night would soon become notorious for being one of the most controversial hate crimes in modern American culture. Based on a true story.
A crime-drama, about the cultural aversion of a group of punk rockers in a conservative Texas town. Their ongoing battle with a rival, more-affluent clique leads to a controversial hate crime that questions the morality of American justice.

Completely grippingI can’t say enough about this movie. It was everything I hoped it could be. I am a parent of four kids and I think it is imperative for parents or anyone who works with youth today to watch. The real story took place 20 years ago but it parallels what many kids in our society face today. The language is very strong but it isn’t anything our kids aren’t hearing every day at school. My kids will be seeing this movie with me because it opens up a much needed discussion about others who are different than us and how we react to one another and how alike we are despite how we are different. It was incredibly put together from the costuming to the casting to the shooting. The acting is incredible...not what I expected from a low budget film at all..Score: 5/5

Exceptional MovieHad the honor of attending the exclusive premiere in Amarillo... I cannot express the kind of unity and emotion it brought to everyone who was there tonight. The movie cinematically was beautifully executed for being a low budget movie. I truly enjoyed every aspect of it. The story it tells is one that should be heard by everyone 🤘🏼🖤.Score: 5/5
Amazing!!I was able to preview this in Amarillo on Jan. 23rd. I am still trying to wrap my feelings, thoughts, and mind around it. I am from Amarillo & remember this event. Time stopped that day.... time stopped Jan. 23 again. It threw me back before I knew what happened. Everything about this film is amazing!.Score: 5/5
FictionAlthough this movie says it is BASED on a true story it is hardly truthful to the situation. Brian Deneke and his “gang” were well known for causing trouble all throughout amarillo. In the movie it shows the tall tale of Brian being some punk rock god that everyone around him loved so much and showed that he was the innocent victim of a “hate” crime. Although this many have been brainwashed to believe, Brian was anything but a victim. The movie depicts that Bryan has done nothing to anybody else and that he’s some scared puppy with his tail tucked between his legs in the corner of a dark alley. The film itself was great but if it was supposed to show exactly how it happened, it would have shown that Brian terrorized the city of Amarillo and it’s citizens, that he thought he was better than everyone else, that he thought the laws and rules placed before him didn’t apply to him..Score: 2/5
This movie is a love letter to fallen heroes and fellow outcastsI don't know if this is a good way to start a movie review, but after seeing this movie all I could think to do was message an old punk buddy of mine and warn him that the next time I saw him 'I was going to hug him and never let go.' I have so much praise for this movie I don't even know where to begin (I would have expressed this praise to the filmmakers during their Tallgrass Film Festival Q&A, but when I was given the mic to comment, I just couldn't make ...words.) Y'see, it's a ton of bricks this movie... Not just in sad ways either, mind you, but across the board. The authenticity is overwhelming: The accuracy of the hangouts, the music blaring, the art that was happening, the bond between outcasts-if you've been there then you know the good times that are had with people who have nothing but would give you the shirt off their back if you needed it. But sadly, a part of that authenticity....the world is usually at war with us outcasts, and this movie shows that reality. Hard. Like all those bricks I mentioned earlier. I'll quit waxing poetic and get to some movie stuff over here- The 3rd act of this film includes a scene that is still managing to shake my punk self and the film snob he grew up to be- to avoid violating the 'spoiler' criteria of this page, I will refer to this scene as the 'Truck Ride'. It may be the most haunting and true depiction of that journey I've ever seen committed to film. It's a perfectly filmed moment and- I pray I'm not out of line by saying-inspiring. Absolutely, we know the tragedy and bedlam that is looming when you take such a ride (and in no way am I trying to make light of the things that follow) but the filmmakers show that along with the fear and bloodcurdling uncertainty of that ride, there is a nobility. A quiet moment shared between the warriors who have no choice but to be on the way to somewhere they shouldn't be going. I'm not kidding, it's that powerful. Oh yeah, movie review... (This movie made me get lost in thought again dammit!) Wonderful job done by all-Acting, Production, Cinematography, Direction. Sound. Everything is Outstanding. I will be owning this movie soon, and I WILL be owning it on DVD-it belongs on the bookshelf next to my copies of 'Another State of Mind', 'Decline of Western Civilization pt 1' and appropriately enough, 'The Outsiders'. In the meantime I'll be raising a glass to fallen punks and fellow outcasts while I play my favorite Subhumans record-This one's for you Brian, I hope punk valhalla is treating you well my Brother..Score: 5/5
This movie WRECKED MEIn such a good way. I hadn’t heard this story and hearing it changed my life. I can’t imagine how his family and friends must feel after learning of the outcome. That wasn’t justice but this movie did his memory justice. It was excellent and beautiful and I’ve been talking about it all day..Score: 5/5
Must see!!I was very young when this happened in our town but to see it portrayed this way was a complete eye opener. Growing up I New the story about what happened and having lots of friends who were an exact replica of these people has made me realize that even in today’s society we are still judged by the clothing we wear, the music we listen to, the friends we have. I’ve started talking to my children about these things and I will be showing this to them when they are a tad older and can understand what’s going on better. This movie although heartbreaking, should be seen by all. This has such a powerful message that needs to be heard!.Score: 5/5
True story important for everyone to see. This is what it means to be a punk rocker in small town Texas but also commentary on our society in general. Watch this with someone you love and discuss what tolerance of different lifestyles means today and how we can embrace diversity which makes our lives richer. I lived in Amarillo and met Brian Deneke and he really was a great person, and being murdered by someone who bragged about it and only got probation for killing someone simply based on the way he looked is something we should discuss. What if it was your brother or son? We have to protect the freedom to be who we are, a very basic American value, or it will be robbed of us. Even if you don’t agree with/like the punk rock lifestyle if you don’t allow others the right to their beliefs and allow people to be murdered for them, then your values/beliefs could very well be next..Score: 5/5
