The Gilded Age presents a compelling and complex story of one of the most convulsive and transformative eras in American history.
In the closing decades of the nineteenth century, during what has become known as the Gilded Age, the population of the United States doubled in the span of a single generation. As national wealth expanded, two classes rose simultaneously, separated by a gulf of experience and circumstance that was unprecedented in American life. These disparities sparked passionate and violent debate over questions still being asked in our own times: How is wealth best distributed, and by what process? Does government exist to protect private property or provide balm to the inevitable casualties of a churning industrial system? The outcome of these disputes was both uncertain and momentous, and marked by a passionate vitriol and level of violence that would shock the conscience of many Americans today.

Great Documentary about a golden era that just wasnât so.I watched this documentary on PBS. I still remember learning segments of the information provided in this film in my college history course. This film goes deep into the era that was known as the gilded age. It was named gilded, for a surface that is thinly painted with gold, and it defines the era roughly from late 1860s to 1896. The tale of robber barons and hard working yet poor Americans is one that can still be found in todayâs society. While the wealthy indulged in their wealth, hard working Americans spent their lives working in factories and fields while they fought for fair wages and reasonable working hours. This film does an extraordinary job of examining the gilded age and the life that Americans experienced. A life that was dependent on the status that you were born into, and one that you were most likely to die in..Score: 5/5
History repeats itself.Fascinating historical review of a century ago. Hauntingly, the economic atrocities described are familiar to someone in the present. Drives home the need to revisit the populism of the disenfranchised working class of that era..Score: 5/5
