When Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family, passes away, her daughter's family begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry. The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited. Making his feature debut, writer-director Ari Aster unleashes a nightmare vision of a domestic breakdown that exhibits the craft and precision of a nascent auteur, transforming a familial tragedy into something ominous and deeply disquieting, and pushing the horror movie into chilling new terrain with its shattering portrait of heritage gone to hell.

This movie had so much potential to be a great horror movie. It didn't rely on jump scares or super loud sound effects. It looked fantastic, the mood was dark and brooding, the acting was fine, and the build-up was intense. But the ending! It felt unbelievably conventional and really felt like someone rushing to write a conclusion to a timed essay. Like they spent too long on the introduction and the body and noticed they had three minutes left to write a conclusion so they spit one out. How utterly disappointing. This could really have been the horror of the year.
One of the worst movies I have ever watched.
Let me say the cast was amazing, but ... It was ok. Cast was super! Everything was great till midway. But I was eye rolling by the end. Too much hype. This was no Jaws or Exorcist!
I rented this movie on iTunes and I thought it was going to be great from everything I'd heard about it. It turned out to be the worst movie I've ever seen in my life! The story line made practulary zero sense. They didn't make the ages of the kids in the movie clear; I thought the girl was like 8 and turned out she was 13, and the boy I thought was in college and turned out he was in high school. It was completely stupid that the mother made the brother take the girl to a high school party at all. It seemed like the girl had some sort of birth defect or mental problem so again why did the mother have the brother take her to a party? Then fast forwarding to the end... What was with the super white naked people? And why did they want the weird looking girl to come back in the boys body? The ending did make absolutely zero sense. I wanted my two hours of wasted time back! Don't waste your time watching this movie, but if you really want to watch it wait until it's on Netflix!
Silly and violent.
This movie was terrible. Toni,s character has mental health issues and using the devil as the cause is offensive. The little girl who gets decapitated by her brothers recklessness while high also is offensive to Canibis patients. The ending was ridiculous and silly. Basically nana is a witch and sells her grandchild to the devil.
I have no idea whatsoever why anyone at all thinks this is scary, suspenseful, tense, or thrilling. It was multiple different plots shoved together without explanation. The ending was...like...it was just bad. Toni Colette deserves better.
One of the worst movies I've seen in a long time. It was boring. The characters were unbelievable and the ony "tenstion" that was produced was in the last 15 minutes of the movie. Just watching a family fall apart did nothing for me. The only redeemtion was the lead actress. She had me believing she was an actual nut case.
This movie is all over the place. Can’t believe it made it to any screen!!!!!
Slow, poor story line, absolutly awful movie. I don't know how it has an 89% rotten tomatoes when 90% of the reviews are one star. Should have looked closer at the reviews. Two hours of my life that I will never get back....
