Will (Ben Foster) and his teenage daughter, Tom (Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie), have lived off the grid for years in the forests of Portland, Oregon. When their idyllic life is shattered, both are put into social services. After clashing with their new surroundings, Will and Tom set off on a harrowing journey back to their wild homeland. From the director of Academy Award®- nominated Winter's Bone, critics are hailing this film as "powerful from start to finish" (Los Angeles Times).
A father and daughter live a perfect but mysterious existence in Forest Park, a beautiful nature reserve near Portland, Oregon, rarely making contact with the world. But when a small mistake tips them off to authorities, they are sent on an increasingly erratic journey in search of a place to call their own.

Few will appreciate this masterpiece...Although this definitely has a 3 act structure, it feels far from the typical Hollywood flick, which I loved. Something about this movie makes a viewer with an open mind think about how they’ve been living their life and whether all the fast paced rush of technology and vapid relationships are really worth it. This made me reflect on my own ability to communicate openly and honestly with my family and friends the way this father-daughter duo communicate with each other. It starts off leaving you with a feeling of bliss while the lead characters live life off the grid, and slowly and very subtly and cleverly pulls you into a sense of deeper meaning behind why the father chooses to live off the grid with his daughter: it’s because he can’t be around people anymore. It’s actually quite beautiful how the writers, director, and actors portray that slow shift with very little dialogue. I found that refreshing and calming whereas others might be trained and conditioned to expect a faster paced and somewhat vapid beat by beat story. I love how they use companionship between animals and the daughter (the rabbit, the bees, the dog) to explain without overused dialogue the fact that she really does want something different than her dad while still honestly showing that he obviously loves her very much but struggles with ptsd to give her the life she wants. She has a pure heart and so does he, but he’s been through hell as you can tell from the newspaper headlines she reads in the cabin they find. At the beginning, he is taking care of her and providing for her and teaching her skills she will always make use of, but by the end, they do a wonderful job of showing how she saves him, how she understands him, how she will always love him and what he taught her. The highs and lows are subtle because the dialogue is sparse which i enjoyed and also because there is not a huge epic music score to TELL you how to feel in every moment. I like that. I am getting very tired of musical scores trying to force me to feel or react certain ways. This film lets you feel whatever you want based on how closely you’re paying attention and thinking about what motivated each character and why they’re in the situations they’re in. Not what I expectedAfter seeing the very high-rating that this received on rotten tomatoes I jumped right into watch. The movie was very slow with a lot of disparate dialogue with many moments of silence. It also does not crescendo into an ending that justifies the slowness. I have no idea how anyone gave this 5 starsFirst, the movie is very slow paced. But, I also thought it didn’t delve deep enough into the background of why he is the way he is — always running/hiding from civilization. Also, never any background on why the girl’s mother is not around. Unless I missed that part because I was bored. The movie is essentially 2 hours of them hiking into the wilderness..Score: 2/5
