Western follows a group of German construction workers in remote rural Bulgaria. The foreign land awakens the men’s sense of adventure, but tensions mount when Meinhard, the silent newcomer of the group, starts mixing with the local villagers. The two sides speak different languages and share a troubled history. Can they learn to trust each other or is the stage being set for a showdown?
Western Film Synopsis
A group of German construction workers set out for a foreign construction site in the Bulgarian province. The strange country awakens adventure feelings among the men. At the same time, they are confronted with their prejudices and mistrust. For two of the men, a nearby village becomes the stage for a competition for the recognition and favor of the village.

Polski Akcja "Westernu" rozgrywa się nie tylko na pograniczu bułgarsko-greckim, ale i na pograniczu dwóch obcych światów: lokalnych wieśniaków i niemieckich robotników budujących na zapadłej prowincji infrastrukturę. Pośród idyllicznych pejzaży, pod uderzającym do głów słońcem toczy się podszyta lękiem gra o dominację. Współprodukowany przez Maren Ade (Toni Erdmann) film ma charyzmatycznego bohatera, dawnego najemnego żołnierza Meinharda (naturszczyk Meinhard Neumann emanuje urokiem dawnych hollywoodzkich gwiazd) dokonującego plemiennej zdrady –wybiera bowiem towarzystwo pogardzanych miejscowych, czego nie mogą mu wybaczyć koledzy z budowy.
Český Meinhard je samotářský dělník, který život pozoruje s nečitelným úsměvem zpovzdálí. Nikde se necítí doma, nečiní mu tedy velký problém přijmout šichtu v zapadlém koutě Bulharska, kde má německá parta v těžkých podmínkách vybudovat vodní elektrárnu. Odlehlá divočina, jazyková bariéra a cizinci, kteří o něm nic nevědí, umožní Meinhardovi vyprávět o sobě jiný příběh a vystupovat jako hrdina a ochránce slabých. V místě, kde si lidé lépe rozumějí beze slov, pocítí naléhavou touhu někam patřit. I za cenu toho, že si znepřátelí krajany, kteří na domorodce hledí svrchu a nijak se nenamáhají udržovat dobré vztahy.
