The Old Man & the Gun is based on the mostly true story of Forrest Tucker (Robert Redford), from his daring prison escape at age 70 to a string of heists that confounded authorities and enchanted the public. Wrapped up in the pursuit are detective John Hunt (Casey Affleck), who is captivated by Forrest’s commitment to his craft, and the woman (Sissy Spacek) who loves him despite his criminal ways.

Mellow & ExcellentThis is an enjoyable film with well executed acting and a creative storyline. We felt it was worth the rental. The poor reviews below may have been from viewers with expectations of an action flick or the pace & sequencing of a modern superhero movie (understandable with their current popularity); however, if you enjoyed movies like Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid, Unforgiven (Eastwood), and Gran Torino (Eastwood) with slow developing stories then you may enjoy this one. If this is indeed Robert Redford's swan song then we wish him all the best. Nicely done and thanks for the years of entertainment. Break a leg..Score: 5/5

“The Old Man & the Gun”When we create, there is always the underlying, implicit question: Are we making entertainment or are we making art? Recently, in cinema, more mainstream independent and even studio films have struggled with a different question. The same question many critics asked after Donna Tartt’s “The Goldfinch” was awarded the Pulitzer: Are we making art or are we trying to give the impression of art? There are many recent examples of this later question being posed by the filmic medium, notably by Zoe Kazan and Paul Dano’s “Wildlife”, Alfonso Cuarón’s “Roma” and, yes, David Lowry’s “The Old Man & the Gun”. While “Wildlife”—though it is at times indecisive—choose to risk art rather than achieve facsimile, and “Roma” has genuine moments where Cuarón puts away the pretensions of the act of telling and genuinely captures, I am disappointed to write that Lowry seems unable, or merely loath, to do so. The markers of facsimile art are not hard to spot; look to “Roma” for the overused, over-slow pan. Examine the script of “Wildlife” and you will find lines (which really speak for themselves) of the likes of, “Do you know what they call trees in a forest fire? Fuel.” Does anyone really see this way? Is this how people, a mother and son, talk? (Yes, it does make a picture look and sound arty, doesn’t it?) These types of films become encumbered in the fact that they are films; although most films manage to transcend this at some point during their runtime, in 90 or so minutes, Lowry never gets there. The most inspired, lively sequence in “Gun” is a montage of Redford’s character’s escape attempts over the years; I couldn’t help wishing, when I saw young Redford’s face (perhaps a marvel of CGI or a lift from another of his earlier movies), that I was watching another, tighter Redford film, perhaps one of his own direction, where the filmmakers were unafraid of failing at art and merely making an entertainment. Technically, the editing in “Gun” feels choppy. It is my belief that this is a side effect of Lowry’s propensity to cut; 5 second shot or Redford riding up the hill from the back, 5 seconds from the front, 2-second closeup and slow pan to a line of cars... Lowry is afraid to hold a shot. (The one instance he, wisely, decided to hold was on a particular inspired monologue delivered by Tom Waits’s character in a barroom.) The dialogue in “Gun” is also flat; yes, it is cutesy, but if you have watched the trailer you have seen the film. A scene between a Redford and a greatly underused Spacek comes to mind; he is giving her a lift in his truck. The scene drags. It seems to have no point, aside from padding the already thin runtime. It is a scene that gives you time to think, and think... and think. And, eventually, you get to thinking, “Why am I watching this at all? I could just as well be sitting in the dark contemplating well-composed 16 mm photographs.” If all of this thought does not fill you with the feeling that this movie, an empty experience, is somehow a blatant attempt to swindle you like a tea-aged Pollock forgery, the obligatory ambiguous ending and yellow title cards may get you there. —Two stars for gorgeously composed frames, solid performances, and noteworthy 16 mm cinematography..Score: 2/5
