Hugh Jackman stars as the charismatic politician Gary Hart in this thrilling drama following the rise and fall of Senator Hart, who captured the imagination of young voters and was considered the overwhelming front runner for the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination. But his campaign was sidelined by the story of an extramarital relationship with Donna Rice. As tabloid journalism and political journalism merged for the first time, Senator Hart was forced to drop out of the race leaving a profound and lasting impact on American politics and the world stage. The film also stars Vera Farmiga, J.K. Simmons and Alfred Molina.
The week America went tabloid. Gary Hart, former Senator of Colorado, becomes the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1987. Hart's intelligence, charisma and idealism makes him popular with young voters, leaving him with a seemingly clear path to the White House. All that comes crashing down when allegations of an extramarital affair surface in the media, forcing the candidate to address a scandal that threatens to derail his campaign and personal life.. The Front Runner Wiki
“The Front Runner” is ever so relevant in our time of politics clashing with media and explores that even our most beloved leaders are still only human. The film follows many characters, doing a great job on introducing them to us with the little screen time they get. The movie goes by fast as it keeps you guessing how the characters can possibly get out of each situation they face until they are left with a single choice. For me, where the film comes short is perhaps too forcibly interjecting contemporary left wing issues that do not fit the setting of the film. This lasts only for, quite literally, a few seconds. Here is a different but outstanding performance by Hugh in a story that has personally given me better direction in my life.
Disappointing! Not our Hugh Jackman! Lousy film.
I dont know who that Pete Murphy character is but , I think he stole the show my favorite up and commune young actor
Despite the so-so reviews I found "The Front Runner" an excellent, well-written film with stand out performances. Hugh Jackman delivers a performance that is riveting and simmering with a virtuoso's control - and Kudos to ALL the actors involved. Every scene had something I could hang my hat on... The responsibility of ethics in media, the insatiable hunger for scandal, society's sexual taboo's, verses actual morality are thrown into a boiling pot that emerge entertaining, intense and thought provoking. A plus! If you watch it, pay attention to the long opening scene with no visible cuts. It's not as obvious as the opening scene in DePalma's "Snake Eyes" or Orson Welles "A Touch of Evil" - but it's quite an accomplishment.
As far as Hugh jackman movies go this is simply good. not great... but good. if your stuck and dont know what to watch this could be an interesting film.
