Mary Queen of Scots explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary Stuart (Academy Award® nominee Saoirse Ronan). Queen of France at 16, widowed at 18, Mary defies pressure to remarry and instead returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. By birth, she also has a rival claim to the throne of Elizabeth I (Academy Award® nominee Margot Robbie), who rules as the Queen of England. Determined to rule as much more than a figurehead, Mary asserts her claim to the English throne, threatening Elizabeth's sovereignty. Rivals in power and in love, the two Queens make very different choices about marriage and children. Betrayal, rebellion and conspiracies within each court imperil both Queens–driving them apart, as each woman experiences the bitter cost of power.

In 1561, Mary Stuart, widow of the King of France, returns to Scotland, reclaims her rightful throne and menaces the future of Queen Elizabeth I as ruler of England, because she has a legitimate claim to the English throne. Betrayals, rebellions, conspiracies and their own life choices imperil both Queens. They experience the bitter cost of power, until their tragic fate is finally fulfilled.

History distorted1. Queen Mary's husband was King Philip of Spain, not Henry Dudley. 2. Queen Mary was not tolerant to all beliefs at all. She executed numerious protestants, and that is how the nickname "Bloody Mary" came from.

UnimpressedIt could have been so much more. The movie just didn't seem to come together. The dialogue, the pace, the development of the characters...just never seemed to get there. The screenplay is horrid, the interior scenes were apparently filmed by flashlight, and Margot Robbie is completely wasted.
