Laurel & Hardy, one of the world’s greatest comedy teams, set out on a variety hall tour of Britain in 1953. Diminished by age and with their golden era as the kings of Hollywood comedy now behind them, they face an uncertain future. As the charm and beauty of their performances shines through, they re-connect with their adoring fans. Even as the tour becomes a hit, Stan & Ollie can’t quite shake the specter of Laurel & Hardy’s past; the long-buried ghosts, coupled with Oliver’s failing health, start to threaten their precious partnership. A portrait of the most tender and poignant of creative marriages, they are aware that they may be approaching their swan song, trying to rediscover just how much they mean to each other.
The untold story of the world's greatest comedy act.. With their golden era long behind them, comedy duo Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy embark on a variety hall tour of Britain and Ireland. Despite the pressures of a hectic schedule, and with the support of their wives Lucille and Ida – a formidable double act in their own right – the pair's love of performing, as well as for each other, endures as they secure their place in the hearts of their adoring public. I was lucky enough to have parents and older siblings introduce me to great comedy legends like, Groucho Marx, The Three Stooges, and Laurel & Hardy. Because they were so unique and talented it is inevitable that any portrayal of these great comedians will be a disappointment. This is one of the rare exceptions! Both actors delievered believable performances. The story was heartflelt and respected the memory of this amazing men! So happy to see this movie!
I do get tired of stories of entertainers whose back stage lives tank as they eat lunch at 5 star hotels.
Did not know what to expect from this movie....it was amazing and very heartwarming film. Both Reilly and Coogan did an amazing job in portraying these two great comedians. I actually thought they were the real thing...It was also emotionally moving..Well done! Highly recommended.
My wife fell asleep during it. I thought the acting was good, but the story could have been better.
...film about friendship. Loved it! You will too!
Wonderful story and terrific acting.
I grew up watching old Laurel and Hardy films on TV, so sure, I’m biased. But still, this is a wonderful film. Reilly and Coogan give impeccable performances. This is just a really sweet movie. I loved it.
Shirley Henderson should not be recorded. She should not be let out of the basement. She also ruined the recent Agatha Christie series. Don't waste your money.
With an emphasis on the GREAT! As a lifelong fan of Laurel and Hardy, seeing this film brought back many memories of the things I loved about them. They were truly wonderful performers and people. Seeing their heartfelt relationship and the real bond they had was warming to the cockles of my heart. I don’t know exactly what I expected from this film, but whatever it was, it was splendidly realized. A heartfelt recommendation!
Remarkable performances from Steve Coogan and John C Reilly as, respexrtively, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. The film shows us the team in their heyday then at the end of their careers with some terrific comedy bits. But the heart of the film is the relationship between them and their wives. Highly recommend
