Truly Bonkers EditingThis movie is just. So hard to follow.
Literally the only reason I had any idea what was going on was because I read the book and was filling in all the details that were left out. Not even just little details that would be understandable to remove because of runtime, but big plot points/characters that are either completely removed, or rushed through. I mean to be fair the book’s timeline is pretty incoherent, but somehow they managed to make it worse.
I saw this with my friend (who hasn’t read the book) and he leaned over and asked me “what is going on” at least 3 different times. All around bonkers editing..Littleshadow14Score: 2/5

Better than critics sayThe book was so good that even a distracted and reduced version of the story is better than most films out there. The characters in the book were realized well on the screen and the cinematography just captures the contrast between Nevada and NYC so beautifully without the usual cliché. A Masterpiece Book destroyed by a sub-par movie....It's hard for me to believe that Donna Tartt would sign off on this piece of garbage. Her book is so masterfully written and in my opinion it would be hard to translate it onto screen in anything other than a mini-series that allows the full depth of the characters to evolve. As I watched this I kept thinking that a viewer who had not read the book would be completely lost. The only redeeming quality for me was the acting of young Oakes Fegley (13-year-old Theo) who obviously has a bright future ahead of him.
