Effective horror film with loads of creepy!From the mind of Clive Barker who directed Hellraiser comes Candyman a horror movie so suprising, violent and sometimes tells a conventional story to spice up the gore and character development. I don't like horror films well some work in my opinion Hollywood makes the same horror film over and over again and keep following trends so that they can make money, But Candyman stays as a sweet cult classic that other slasher films like Friday the 13th, Halloween, Saw, A Nightmare on Elm Street or Scream those films are over the top and scary.
Candyman follows this university student Helen Lly (Virgina Madsen) and her friend Bernadette must investigate and believe in the cold blooded serial killer named Candyman (Tony Todd) a hook killer once you say his name five times in the mirror your most likely to die in the hands of The Candyman.
Candyman falls to short on jump scares which makes this film to patted out and not scary because with all the widdy gore and interesting creepy performence by Tony Todd as Candyman this film was very sweet and joyful for me and for many audiences who want to get scared Candyman sure will give you the nightmare of your life, I highly recommend Candyman although it's descent enough to be a masterful horror film it manages to be violent and supirising to watch-rating 8/10.Nicholas becerraScore: 3/5

Helen is doing extensive research on college a paper about an urban legend in Chicago about a man who appears when you say his name 5 times in a mirror and kills you. He's known as Candyman.
Based on a Clive Barker story, this movie is written and directed with tremendous skill by Bernard Rose.
I have to say I was so not ready for this movie. I figured it was just a slasher movie, Freddy Kruger but with bees or something. It's actually an INCREDIBLY deep and psychological horror movie. There's no easy answers in this movie, things do not come together in a tidy finale where evil is vanquished and the final girl survives.
Virigina Madsen gives a great performance as Helen. Again I figured this was just going to be a slasher movie and she'd be the pretty blonde who gets chased by a killer. She actually develops a disturbing and close relationship with Candyman over the course of the movie. And she may or may not have done some terrible things by the end of the story and the ambiguity in that really unnerved me.
Tony Todd plays Candyman and it's an iconic horror villain. It's like Freddy Kruger without the sense of humor, but just the nightmarish aspects. Very strong presence from Todd in the movie, just his voice is enough to send chills down your spine. And Candyman has such a tragic story as his origin that I couldn't help but feel sorry for him and a sense of sadness every time he showed up in the movie.
Added to the character is this awesome and creepy style, the ghostly way Candyman is depicted and the bees just add a strange flavor to him. Then there's the hook I figured he was HOLDING a hook but we see it's buried into his torn flesh where his hand was cut off, so again... tough not to feel bad for the guy.
The movie has such an artistic style to its horror, it's never done as camp but always done in a very unsettling way. This is not a fun movie in any way, I'm half surprised it even got made by a studio like Universal.
There's also an underlying theme of poverty and racial inequality in the movie with Candyman haunting a high rise housing project in the ghetto of Chicago. And you get the feeling nobody's coming to save a black community so without Helen there's REALLY no chance for peace for the people who live there. Again I cannot get over how brutally sad this movie is.
Candyman is such a great horror film with a classic villain and I'm gonna have a hard time shaking this one off, frankly..Fabisch FactorScore: 5/5
