Sadly this is one of those movies where we just keep hopping from scene to scene... to scene... to scene... and then it turns out that’s all there is. After sitting through about 2/3rds of this film, all the while hoping for something interesting to happen, I gave up and went to bed.

Love Tom Hanks but this one wasn't his best choice of screenplays. It reminded me of those old school young adult novels where the stories are oversimplified and lacking nuance. Maybe less time showing the protangonists in the wagon and more time exploring the indigenous and political themes they encountered along the way. Gorgeous scenery though - Mother Nature saved the day (and the dollar).

Tom Hanks with another great performance. Great rental; wish I could’ve purchased because I’ll definitely watch again.

EBReview - Worth it for Movie Night with 2+ peopleGreat movie. Tom Hanks is his often-outstanding self playing his character, but the young girl is truly amazing in her part, too. In fact, the entire movie was extremely well cast, the acting was spot on, the shots appropriate with excellent direction. Truly nothing not to like about this movie.
As for $20 to rent it for a single showing, well, it’s still cheaper than buying a couple of first-run movie tickets, and we are still in a pandemic, so don’t begrudge the studios and all of the people trying to make a living in the entertainment industry from getting what they can.
We enjoyed it.

Carmichael girl - The challenge of doing the right thingThis movie was beautifully done; fantastic acting, beautiful cinematography, and a deliberate thought-provoking moving tale. I watched it twice during the rental period and was happy to support the efforts of good movie-making. The people complaining about the rental price might be the same people I have seen in the loges section of the plush theaters where they could eat pizza while someone brought the their wine.

Aleurone - MediocreThe story taken on the whole could have been made interesting, but sadly wasn't. A very simplistic plot that felt like it was going nowhere most of the time. Neither leading actor was given much of a script to work with. There is nothing clevar or creative about this movie. Cinematography was good, and sets and costumes believable but done on a budget scale. Purchase with lowered expectations and you might find it to be OK.

Still manages to entertain and surprise on occasion, and Hanks is good as a form of walking evening news with gun and a familiar backstory. It all plays out by numbers, and no rewards for guessing how things end, but a decent diversion. Paying the $20 is still cheaper than seeing it in the theater after gas and drinks. Not sure what the fuss is about.

Probably not his fault, maybe the director wasn’t quite up to the challenge. Anyway, the entertainment value received from the movie certainly wasn’t worth $20 even if that had been the purchase price rather than the rental price. I was disappointed. I’d advise potential viewers to wait until the purchase price of this movie falls to $15 or less, if ever, to purchase it. Otherwise you’re better off spending your money on another entertainment.

oncanuck - Pass!I watched this film on Netflix UK (for free). Thankfully, I didn’t have to pay $25 for it—a much too expensive rental. Ultimately, I didn’t like the film. I found the story very predictable and knew how it would end halfway through. Nothing different here. A basic, boring, 2-hour story. Save your $25 and pass!

The acting was through the roof excellent, and the storytelling just absolutely superb on all ends. Tom Hanks lights up the screen with his performance once again, and Helena Zengel shines equally bright at his side. Worth every single penny to rent, and will be buying it when it comes out.

Having said that, this film was really good. Hanks and Greengrass collaborate well together. Not as great as Captain Phillips but still top notch.

From the bandits on the road, to the Northern soldiers checking everyone’s papers and searching for guns, it really captures the audience. Don’t watch this film expecting an action movie, because it moves about as fast as the wagon they ride on - and I was just fine with that.
