This perennial, Christmas-season favorite teams screen legends Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire as entertainers (and rival suitors of Marjorie Reynolds) running an inn that is only open on holidays. It's a true showcase for lots of singing and dancing, seamlessly wrapped in a catchy story. The Irving Berlin numbers (each one connected to a different holiday) are winners, while Crosby's warm performance of "White Christmas" becomes a movie touchstone (and winner of the Oscar for Best Song)! Timeless ClassicAlways watched this movie proceeding White Christmas on Christmas Eve. As a film with high regard of the American history and social time frame, beware of the Black face scene and educate young ones of cultural impacts but I would also say that there is no need to remove the scene as erasing issues and not learning from the past is never a good idea..Score: 5/5
Historically Important MovieThe Ambraham scene is one of the most racist scenes I have seen in a movie celebrated as a time honored film, however I think it's worth keeping it in place and recognizing that it is offensive to many people. The movie was made in a time that this was acceptable - but just barely. As we, as a society, have evolved - blackface and the sterotypes in this film that protray black people as lower or less than whites is even less acceptable. To delete the scene and pretend it never happend would be the easy way out. It is the way this film gets broadcast on commercial funded channels - no advertiser in their right mind would want to be around that scene. However, it allowed me to have a very honest discussion with my children about this scene and many other things in the world that were once ok but now are not. It's not an easy scene for me to watch, it goes against my upbringing and I'm whiter than wonder bread. On the whole, the movie was above average but nothing earth shattering. Without it we wouldn't have White Christmas - which in my opinion is a much better film..Score: 4/5
