Following the closure of a gypsum mine in the rural Nevada town she calls home, Fern (Frances McDormand) packs her van and sets off on the road. Exploring life outside conventional society as a modern-day nomad, Fern soon discovers a resilience and resourcefulness that present her with experiences unlike any she’s known before. Along the way in this story of hope, she meets other nomads who become mentors in her life amidst the vast, sometimes breathtaking landscape of the American West. From Searchlight Pictures and acclaimed director Chloé Zhao, NOMADLAND features real-life nomads Linda May, Swankie and Bob Wells. With care and insight, Zhao crafted the screenplay, based on Jessica Bruder’s book “Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century.” McDormand brings Fern to life with a powerful, authentic performance. Also starring David Strathairn in a gripping turn as a man Fern befriends, NOMADLAND is a fascinating celebration of humanity, independence and adventure.
A woman in her sixties embarks on a journey through the western United States after losing everything in the Great Recession, living as a van-dwelling modern-day nomad.

Great Acting, Cliche In Every Other WayGreat acting performances only go so far when there is virtually no plot, no depth and no point to a movie. I think it’s a joke for anyone to say this is ‘Best Picture’ type stuff. You don’t have to settle for some ridiculous, artsy and, frankly, uber-pretentious overdone film like Nomadland to find a Best Picture. This movie is just straight up boring and lifeless. It's a window, not a storyI was surprised this film achieved the coveted Oscar for Best Picture. Generally the films that win are fantastic stories with emotional performances. This film, for all its nuance and introspection, wasn't either. McDormand is a sensational actress and she fully embodied Fern - and the glimpse into this way of life was interesting and even heartbreaking at times...but there was absolutely no story arc. Sensational filmmaking? Yes. Sensational film? Not so much. I commend the subject matter and acting, but the writing left so much to be desired..Score: 3/5

Interesting but…This movie is dull and slow. Maybe sombre is a better word. But I kept waiting for something to happen and it never did. The performances are all great, every character felt like an actual person. I just don’t understand what the director what going for. It seemed as though they wanted van life to come across a good and positive thing. But with the low energy and quiet tone, it mostly felt lonely and sad. Even though the lead was often interacting with other people. I think the pairing of van dwelling and the character having gone through a significant life change was a mistake. It mostly felt like she was trying to get away from something but the whole time she’s supposed to be enjoying herself. This is the life she chose, the life she wants. But it’s rarely depicted in a way that seems positive. But I think the director wanted it to be positive. Which is why I’m confused. All the way through to the end the film keeps the same pace and tone. Which also helps to confuse me, because at a moment where it seems the lead made progress… it didn’t feel like it. I got the same feeling from the end as from the beginning and it genuinely felt like nothing happened, even though I watched things happen.
