Slick rehabilitation of a monsterHarvey Keitel's understated, and in many ways brilliant performance, rescues this film from an otherwise well-deserved cinematic grave. Lansky was a merciless buthcher of the innocent as well as fellow criminals. This this movie manages to render him, in the final analysis, a wise and caring soul who forgives a betrayal, attends shul and weeps for his disabled son. What a farce. Moreover, it's not hard to guess what's up with the beauty in the pool swimming pool, and despite the fact that Lansky was a four-pack-a-day smoker he is seldom shown smoking in the flashbacks..Ezekiel G.
