James Cameron teams up with NASA scientists to explore the Mid-Ocean Ridge, a submerged chain of mountains that band the Earth and are home to some of the planet's most unique life forms.

Drowned by lack of focusThis was a real disappointment. James Cameron needs to stay out of this genre. Titled Aliens of the Deep, a viewer would be mistaken in thinking this documentary is mostly about unique life forms undersea. In fact it wanders back all over from the crew backstories, to the ships and submersibles, to Mars, Jupiter's moons and a frustratingly small amount of undersea footage of real animals. While a fraction of the footage is indeed fascinating, the whole thing is an unsatisfying collection of ideas. The finale is laughably the worst in documentary history by showing two of the young explorers from the film meeting outer space aliens identical to those from The Abyss, Cameron's terrific SCI FI thriller. If you're looking for an educational well organized production about deep sea life, this one is NOT it..Score: 1/5

You might want to buy it!If you are interested in the science of our world and what surrounds it. You will enjoy this movie deeply. This is a movie but filmed as if it were a documentary. I would have to say this is one of a kind because it truly is part documentary and movie. It documents several different scientists from several different areas of study. They all team up under one theory, which is, to understand more about outer space, we need to understand more about the depths of Earth. There are creatures right here on Earth that are every bit as alien as you could possibly imagine. Some of these creatures thrive in environments where humans would not last a second... Right here on Earth! If we study these environments and and the creatures that live in them, we are gaining knowledge that will help us through future space missions. Our world was built with the same ingredients from the universe as other planets. It only makes perfect sense. I rented it but now wish I would have bought it..Score: 5/5
Cameron directed this bag of spare clippings?Very dull, very slow and very poorly directed. There are potentially marvelous opportunities to really see some of the astonishing creatures; but the time spent on them is reduced to seconds, apparently to allow more time for sententious and unenlightening statements from the crew about space. Is this a paid advertisement for the inter-planetary space program? It wasn't very good at that either but at least it would explain the mishmash of clips and focus shifts..Score: 1/5
AwesomeThis documentary is amazing, especially the last 10 minutes where they explore what it could be like exploring the under-ice ocean of Europa.Score: 5/5
BeautifulThis documentary takes us to places we ourselves may never be able to go. I admit that this may be too slow paced for some, but for those of us who have been fascinated with the ocean for as long as we remember this is a treasure trove, and every second is cherished. I highly recommend this documentary to anyone - even to those who don't already have a fascination with the deep places of the Earth. You never know - you may find a new passion..Score: 5/5
Interesting.Yes, of all the words I could use to describe this documentary, I would say it was interesting. I saw it in IMAX and while some of my friends fell asleep while watching it, I stayed awake. It describes the epipment that they use to explore the depths of the ocean, and explains what scientists hope to find in far away planets. Refund please! If one judges solely on the informative value of the film, this documentary is okay. Many parts are scripted and it wouldn't have been so easy to discern had they hired better actors and fine tuned their editing. When I think of a documentary film, I think "nonfiction". Only In a history documentary would I be okay with a re-creation of true events, but not in a wildlife feature. This film insulted my intelligence. I should've just rented..Score: 2/5
It was alright...This movie did get off to a pretty slow start, it introduced you to some of the scientists, and told you about most of there technology. It only got to the intresting stuff about 30 minutes into the film. I do not wish to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it. As a whole, it was quite interesting, but like I said, the begining was rather dull. If you are into Science and/or space exploration, it would be a good movie for you..Score: 4/5
Keep your distance and moneyWhat a waste of time and money on making this film, so don't waste your money renting or buying it. The title is deceptive as the so-called "scientists" in the expedition are unable to say one single word about the deep water creatures except "Wow, this is incredible!!!" or "What an amazing fish!!" or even from Jim Cameron himself comes this pearl: "This must be the ugliest fish in the world!!!". Apart from that, there is endless footage of deep water hot vents and surrounding ecosystem, which has been much better documented and explained in other Nat Geo documentaries. The icing on the cake is the last minutes animation with the "aliens". Calling this a documentary is an offense to the genre..Score: 1/5
