In the midst of a global crisis, the USS Alabama receives unconfirmed orders to launch its nuclear missiles -- signaling the start of World War III! The tension escalates as the sub's respected commander (Hackman) and his brilliant executive officer (Washington) clash over the validity of their orders ... battling each other for control of the sub!

After the Cold War, a breakaway Russian republic with nuclear warheads becomes a possible worldwide threat. U.S. submarine Capt. Frank Ramsey signs on a relatively green but highly recommended Lt. Cmdr. Ron Hunter to the USS Alabama, which may be the only ship able to stop a possible Armageddon. When Ramsay insists that the Alabama must act aggressively, Hunter, fearing they will start rather than stop a disaster, leads a potential mutiny to stop him.

Good movie altogether. Could use a LOT less of what it's rated for and still be great.This is a great movie with a good plot but the story centers around a smaller problem than what is said to be the bigger picture. That being said, it's important to note that it's got one really big flaw, aside from the highly excessive level of profanity, and that is what the story and plot centers around: two command officers battling over control of the "most lethal killing machine ever devised", and that doesn't seem to affect how the story plays out. Not to give away any major plot points, of course. The story's biggest flaw is how the battling of control over the ship doesn't cause any weighty changes within the plot. Instead it's a constant butting of heads by the said. Overall, it's a very intense movie, unfortunately, the excessive language and teh overcentered plot completely and totally prevents this film from being truly great. If, when available, most viewers would be wise to simply rent the film and see for themselves why buying this film, despite how intense the action is, would be something that would require a specific taste for films that don't by any means meet their fullest potentials and instead revolve around smaller problems when bigger the bigger relating directly to the characters is at hand with no heed to more important story/plot points associated with such. Rent when possible, but don't be disappointed if you find out why the story/plot is far from perfect. The film's strengths are in the action between the butting of heads. It's biggest weakness is the fact that that's all it revolves around with an attempt at justufication that I will leave up to the viewers to discover. Enjoy!.DJ4000Score: 4/5
