Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman) and his wife, Etheline (Anjelica Huston), had three children -- Chas, Margot, and Richie -- and then they separated. Chas (Ben Stiller) started buying real estate in his early teens and seemed to have an almost preternatural understanding of international finance. Margot (Gwyneth Paltrow) was a playwright and received a Braverman Grant of $50,000 in the ninth grade. Richie (Luke Wilson) was a junior champion tennis player and won the U.S. Nationals three years in a row. Virtually all memory of the brilliance of the young Tenenbaums was subsequently erased by two decades of betrayal, failure, and disaster. With a strong cast, quirky but believable characters, and a soundtrack that meshes perfectlyThis film is a real gem. The characters are odd, but real. The dialog has a vitality lacking in many films these days. Gene Hackman is the shining core of this diamond, with a performance as good as any he has given in the past. His character is the bass note of this film, and all the action is triggered by his attempt to redeem his life. Probably the most believable part is that hackman's character discovers that he wants to turn his life away from his self centered past while in the process of pulling a scam. After that, the film starts to lighten. The music, mood, and even the lighting is brighter. The remarkable use of music in the film adds to the impact the film has on the viewer. On first viewing, the music is merely subtly engaging; by the third or fourth time watching the film you begin to realize that at moments the lyrics are in perfect sync to the actions occuring on the screen. As a comedy, it has its moments of hilarity, but is more at home with the wistful smile, with a slight tear. If your tastes run to "porky's" or other broad comedy, then this film is not for you. If you are a fan of the Cohen brother's work, then you will enjoy this film immensely..Score: 5/5
Beauty is in the eye of the beholderI love this movie. One of my top 3 movies of all time. That said, if you have not seen this movie, I would recommend renting it. A lot of people see "comedy" and think they're buying another Zoolander, or Anchorman, specifically after reading the cast list. However, you should know that this as with all of Wes Anderson's films is generally darker and more subtle comedy. I wouldn't argue with someone who said they didn't find it funny and had no desire to see it again. However, nothing infuriates me more than people making blanket statements and saying that it's an awful film and Wes Anderson is horrible and so on. He has an amazingly creative mind and is a brilliantly original director. I guess I'm just saying that don't look at the cast list, and notice that this movie has an overall 4 1/2 star rating and buy it. 98% of you will most likely fall in love with it. 2% of you will hate it and want to strangle the people who wrote possitive reviews..Score: 5/5
A Familial MasterpieceThe fact that this film only got a 80% on Rotten Tomatoes is shocking. The Royal Tenenbaums is a film that I have loved since childhood and yet still remains one of my favorite films. This, I believe, is Anderson's masterpiece, more than Rushmore, Darjeeling, or Life Aquatic. The film dwells with the subject of family, and captures all of its disfunctions and beauties.It may be appalling and exaggerated at moments, but only in Andersons not-quite-real fantasy realm. I highly recommend to anyone who has not seen this film to watch it..Score: 5/5
