As World War I rages, brave and youthful Australians Archy and Frank—both agile runners—become friends and enlist in the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps together. They later find themselves part of the Dardanelles Campaign on the Gallipoli peninsula, a brutal eight-month conflict which pit the British and their allies against the Ottoman Empire and left over 500,000 men dead.

This takes place in Australia and the imfamous battle at Gallipoli where two young Ausies fight with the Australian army against the Turks. Dlouhá příprava a ražisérova neústupnost se vyplatily, neboť GALLIPOLI patří k nejpůsobivějším protiválečným snímkům, vůbec. Příběh australských mladíků, jejichž naivní představy o válčení jsou krutým způsobem uvedeny na pravou míru, je přes svůj historický rámec právě dnes velmi aktuální. Velkoryse pojatý film vyniká kupodivu především drobnokresbou jednotlivých postav. Kvality scénáře, důsledně vycházejícího z historické skutečnosti, umocnila suverenní a přitom nápadná režie. Emotivní účinek díla znásobují citlivě použité hudební motivy různých žánrů. Film GALLIPOLI získal celkem 9 australských filmových cen (nejlepší režie, mužský herecký výkon - Mel Gibson, mužský herecký výkon ve vedlejší roli - Bill Hunter, kamera, scénář, zvuk, střih a výprava).
