Winner of the Best Picture and Best Screenplay awards at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival, "You Can Count on Me" has been hailed as "the best American movie this year." Laura Linney, in her Oscar nominated role, and Mark Ruffalo star as grown-up siblings who couldn't be more different. While conservative Sammy (Linney) stayed in her quiet hometown, rebellious Terry (Ruffalo) was on the road, drifting in and out of trouble. When Terry suddenly comes to visit, his presence has a profound influence on Sammy's world. As Terry forms a special friendship with Sammy's precocious eight-year-old son, Rudy (Rory Culkin), Sammy rediscovers her passion for life, entertaining a marriage proposal from her boyfriend (Jon Tenney) while having a fling with her boss (Matthew Broderick). But when Terry's behavior become disruptive, Sammy must finally confront the choices of the past...and make new ones to renew her family's future.
A single mother's life is thrown into turmoil after her struggling, rarely-seen younger brother returns to town.

Breath taking and brilliantThe characters in this movie are so true to real life, that it is easy to relate and empathize with them. One of the best things about this story, in my opinion, is its honesty. I saw people's selfish choices affecting others in such a brutal and blind way, which is something that couldn't be truer to real life. It can give one great perspective. The 8-year old boy, played by Rory Caulkin, was an important part of this story and he is utterly heart-breaking to watch. They couldn't have had a better cast, and each role no matter the size is of equally great importance to the story. This film was enjoyable, and certainly recommended for anyone who likes eye-opening drama..Score: 5/5

RefreshingThis movie is absolutely refreshing because it's not a Hollywood movie with a Hollywood plot. It's about real people, their problems and how they deal with them. I'm still thinking about it several days after I watched it..Score: 5/5
Awesome movieThis is the film that made me love the work of the talented and relatable Laura Linney. This movie is so well-written and so enjoyable! The acting is great (Laura Linney was nominated for an Oscar and this film really put Mark Ruffalo and Rory Culkin on the map), but the script is really top-notch. Kenneth Lonergan writes about everyday people, and his dialogue is realistic, but also quite smart. Dont miss this Indie gem!.Score: 5/5
Mildly entertainingThis film was entertaining and worth watching, but I wouldn't agree that it is necessarily a proper depiction of 'American' sibling interaction. At least in my experience. I don't know of any siblings that interact in such a way (myself included). Nonetheless, this is a good, dysfunctional, entertaining film. Enjoy!.Score: 3/5
Great DialogueThis is one of the most insightful movies I have even seen. The camera work is so subtle and so is the acting. I had never seen or heard of Mark Ruffalo before and I was instantly a fan. Matthew Brodercick is at his best . I agree with another reviewer how this was not nominated for an Oscar is a big surprise. A great great film.Score: 4/5
THE American FilmThis is the exact film those from outside of the United States should watch to see a "typical" American family, the way they interact, and the way they prove through their actions that they are nowhere near to perfect. No punches are spared. No lines are missed. This is the perfect American movie. Do not go into this movie expecting the wrong things - simply purchase this film if you appreciate fine acting and filmmaking. I wish there were more movies even half as good as this. It is my favorite movie, and I hope it will soon be yours..Score: 5/5
Not that greatWhen i saw that this movie had such high reviews i was very excited to buy it.....and now i dont know why. i think the plot could have been so much greater and more impactful with its "life lesson" but it really just left me flat. I wouldnt but this movie.Score: 2/5

No hollywood endingThis film is subtle, like life. The characters are genuine and breath on their own. There are no hollywood manglings and cliches to derail it. This should have won the Oscar for best writing, and I reckon Linney came in a close second to Julia Roberts in the oscar voting also.
