In Babel, a tragic incident involving an American couple in Morocco sparks a chain of events for four families in different countries throughout the world. In the struggle to overcome isolation, fear, and displacement, each character discovers that it is family that ultimately provides solace. In the remote sands of the Moroccan desert, a rifle shot rings out - detonating a chain of events that will link an American tourist couple's frantic struggle to survive, two Moroccan boys involved in an accidental crime, a nanny illegally crossing into Mexico with two American children and a Japanese teen rebel whose father is sought by the police in Tokyo. Separated by clashing cultures and sprawling distances, each of these four disparate groups of people are nevertheless hurtling towards a shared destiny of isolation and grief. In the course of just a few days, they will each face the dizzying sensation of becoming profoundly lost - lost in the desert, lost to the world, lost to themselves - as they are pushed to the farthest edges of confusion and fear as well as to the very depths of connection and love.

Potential didn't cut it all the wayI loved hearing the story and the plot and thinking to myself, this could be great. A movie about how lives are interconnected by a string of events---how people all grow from one event--this is the kind of movie that interests me. However, the story was badly written and poorly executed. Granted, Brad Pitt did an awesome job acting and so did all the characters and the cinematography was excellent, but the story was where it lost it for me. The story didnt connect well and the Japanese girl's bit, was interesting and powerful, but felt removed from everything else. So, I think you should own this movie and watch it. But know that it had much more potential than what you will see..Score: 3/5
Boring......I was so excited to see this film and when i saw it it fell flat on so many levels. I usually love the odd indie films so I was sure I would love this. That is what made it such a disappointment. The film is full of these long panning shots of desert that last for 5 mins at a time. It just lags on and on and then leaves you with a blank unfulfilled ending..Score: 1/5
Don't try to figure it out.People who need a clear-cut, linear narrative won't be able to tolerate "babel." but there is enough of an emotional climax at the end to give the audience a sense of having made the journey for some reason. and logistically speaking, ultimately there is a clear connection to all the fragments. and that connection helps illuminate the film's message, which is about the inherent tragic nature of our divided universe, in which we unwittingly cause others pain by pursuing our own pleasure, thereby causing ourselves untold pain in the end. "babel" addresses this theme both compassionately and starkly, as well as with dazzling technical brilliance. in my opinion, this film's scope of concern and its artistic and technical achievements puts it into a class by itself. quite plainly, "babel" belongs to the school of high art. "the departed" and "crash" do not. they are saturday morning cartoons compared to this masterpiece. anyway, at least just try it and see what you think..Score: 5/5
Simply breathtaking. This film represents the fullest expression of film as a medium. It's a story (stories) that could not have been told any other way--Babel maximizes the cinematic possibilities of space and time, of music, language, and imagery. It's to be savored... surrender yourself to it, sink into its worlds. Even the subtitles are by design--this isn't a foreign film whose subtitles are slapped on after the fact. They are purposeful, placed and timed to be digested as the images and sounds of the film are to be taken in. This film is a huge and brilliant accomplishment in its medium. It's not for everyone, but I think it will forever have its place as a work representing just how full an expression one film can create..Score: 5/5
Overrated!I saw this movie at the Chicago International Film Festival. The hype was intense and so I gave the movie a chance. A chance that the movie then promptyl flushed down the toliet. The premise was ludicrous (spoiler) a well to do American couple who recently lost a child, and seem to have lost that spark for their relationship go to a remote region of the world (Cameroon) to resurrect their marriage while leaving their other kids at home with a Mexican housekeeper. Now I ask you, if you had recently lost a child would you leave your other children at home so you can resurrect your marriage? NO! Now if you are going to do this resurrection, would you go to some remote location like Cameroon where violence is common place? NO! Anyway the story is entirely too long. I remember when the movie reached an apex at about the 2 hour mark and it did not end the entire theatre shift in there seats knowing this wasn't ending anytime soon. I did give it 2 stars because the Japanese story was worth seeing but everything else you can promptly flush..Score: 2/5
Just and FairThe movie is a powerful statement on what diversity actually means - an openness to understading other points of view and rearranging life to accomodate everyone's backgrounds/lifestyles. The cues are subtle and easy to miss, but that's what makes the movie refreshingly refined and a world away from the usual brashness that is associated with tackling difficult subject matter. I found it reassuring to see images that I could relate to, that I could readily associate with... the refusal of the host in Morocco to accept money for his hospitaly, captured the spirit and ethics of the region in a way I've been trying to write about for years. That children are the victims of their parents' misjudgment, no matter where you are in the world... because of the loss of the spark of intimacy and the compulsion to be overprotective, is another view I enjoyed seeing addressed on the screen. That young adults reach sexual maturity and get a sense of how vulnerable they are, without encouragement, guidance or positive supervision, was also tackled quite delicately. I was impressed by how intimately every character was portrayed... usually the focus is on a small cast, to ensure proper script writing and character development. By showing how every character reacted under extreme pressure to specific experiences, their true inner selves were brought out in seconds, to leave lasting impressions... and enough food for thought, to carry me over for days..Score: 5/5
BabelThis movie would not work if we all had one language. It is about multiculturalism after the movie ask yourself if you have been guilty of any of the situations in the movie. The movie is successful because it goes outside the American formula driven movies. There is a percieved Caucasian hero in the begining which sad to say most American films MUST have. The is no happy ending. You get a minute of what is like to be deaf, though many of the lower raters didn't get why the sound track cut in and out when it went from third person to first person point of view. You get a glimpse of life through a childs eyes what a gun outside the Hollywood films actually does. You get a taste of what "illegal" feels like. But then Americans who make the lines in the sand and crimilize the cheap labor we exploit because we dont speak one language. Sign language isn't international and still is not allowed in many countries and in many schools in the united states. The Japanese character portrayed what many deaf people experience. A lifetime of ridicule because the uninformed assume they are different and less because they how they communicate. Get out of your box and try to see each character through their eyes instead of what your government, employer, and the industrialized American system. You might feel something for the two boys, their father, the towns people, the deaf girl?
