Inspired by historical fact and larger-than-life legend, the intelligently scripted story takes place in Scotland in 1713, when Highland farmer and clan leader Rob Roy MacGregor is forced to borrow money from the duplicitous aristocrat Marquis of Montrose to help his clan survive a harsh winter. When Montrose's vile henchman schemes to dishonor MacGregor and his wife and take the money for himself, the rugged Highlander must take courageous action to preserve his integrity. What follows--along with some of the finest sword-fighting ever filmed--is a tale of courage and valor destined to become an enduring movie classic.
In the highlands of Scotland in the 1700s, Rob Roy tries to lead his small town to a better future, by borrowing money from the local nobility to buy cattle to herd to market. When the money is stolen, Rob is forced into a Robin Hood lifestyle to defend his family and honour.

A story of legend brought to lifeHere is a movie that was made at the same time as Braveheart and for the most part was over shadowed. Which is better? It does not matter they are both really good films. I really enjoyed Rob Roy because of his honor and courage. He did what needed to be done in a time when most people took the easy path. Rob Roy is worth watching at least 10 times and each time I have watched it I have seen different things and been left amazed at the wonderful work that was done here..Score: 5/5
A Delight...This film has all the basic requirements for a first-rate drama: good actors, solid character development, and a well-written and executed script. I cared about the characters and this held my interest throughout the movie. The villains were perhaps the best part of the movie. Maybe a little overacted by Lange and the score wore a bit thin. However, overall, this is a good flick..Score: 4/5

Such a pityMaybe it was the negative moral implications of this movie that left it in the shadow of Braveheart. Some scenes, though no less gory than Braveheart were played out on a much smaller scale and in some cases cut the heart much deeper if you get my meaning. The acting is outstanding, the writing is even better, and the story though not as 'epic' as the other scottish tale it fell in the shadow of, is just as well as the forementioned aspects. My one and only bout with this movie is that I purchased it off itunes and the video quality is pretty horrible to say the least. -.-.Score: 5/5

SuperiorI'm not sure that most people compare Rob Roy to Braveheart, but I did from the minute I started watching this film. I had seen Braveheart before and knew that it is considered a film classic, but I never cared much for it (and I found it rather annoying that Gibson made himself a Christ-figure, but that's a different argument). I was flipping throught the TV channels one day and I stummbled on Rob Roy and fell in Love with it. The story captivated me and wouldn't let go for three days. After watching it on TV, I ran to the closest Blockbuster (that is now closed) and rented it. Neeson and Roth's performances are just superb. I would expect nothing better from either of them! Top notch work. As I said before, I'm not sure everyone else compares Rob Roy to Braveheart (both involving Scottish heros fighting for freedom against English oppression) but if asked to choose between the two, I would pick Rob Roy every time! SuperbRob Roy and Braveheart came out the same year. It always amazed me that it was the latter that won laurels at the Oscars; Rob Roy was by far the better film. Great performances all round, but probably best were a series of studies in wickedness: Tim Roth the social climber and master of court intrigue; Brian Cox as the corrupt factor; and John Hurt as the manipulating master - all meet their comeuppance directly or indirectly at the hand of Liam Neeson as a solid scots hero. Gibson’s Braveheart is a woad coated sheep bleating compared to this..Score: 5/5
Entertainment With SubstanceRob Roy is an equal mix of action, romance and political intrigue. This movie should come highly recommended to anyone who enjoyed Braveheart. Rob Roy has one of the most interesting casts of characters in a historical epic. Rob Roy is different from many movies of this genre, in that his victories don't come easily. You'll get to watch Liam Neeson take a beating and continue to stand up for more. The hero who really risks death is much more entertaining to me than the one who seems invincible. The villains of the movie don't come any more dispicable than here. While at times, Rob Roy's archrival borders on moustach-twirling comic book villainy (for lack of a better term), Tim Roth manages to pull it off and makes the character believable. When the movie comes to a climax, you'll feel invested in both characters and should care who wins. The movie climax, by the way, is one of the greatest scenes in any movie I've ever seen, but I can't say any more than that. The music is farly standard Scottish fare, but it's fitting and beautiful, almost haunting. The same could be said for the movie's lavish scenery. All in all, I can't recommend the movie enough..Score: 5/5
