Robert De Niro, Kenneth Branagh, Tom Hulce, Helena Bonham Carter, Aidan Quinn, Ian Holm and John Cleese star in Branagh's acclaimed adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. True to the original, here is the story of a young doctor whose obsession with death leads him to create a life. But his "creature" crafted from the bodies of convicts and the brain of a brilliant scientist, is a hideous mockery of humanity. And when the creature realizes he will never be accepted by men, he seeks revenge on Dr. Frankenstein and his family. An inspired adaptation that's emotionally complex and truly terrifying.
Based on Mary Shelley's novel, "Frankenstein" tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a promising young doctor who, devastated by the death of his mother during childbirth, becomes obsessed with bringing the dead back to life. His experiments lead to the creation of a monster, which Frankenstein has put together with the remains of corpses. It's not long before Frankenstein regrets his actions.

If you want to watch bad movies, listen to Rotten TomatoesThis movie is about as good a film interpretation of such a complex classic novel as any movie can be. Considering that this version captures the mood, develops the characters, and explores the themes of this fascinating novel to an extent we have never seen from Hollywood, I think that this movie accomplishes the task of doing this book justice quite well. I have noticed that the reviews given by Rotten Tomatoes for legitimately good movies are misguided and misinformed to be polite. I have to conclude that the people writing reviews for this site are dolts of the highest order. Anyone who criticizes this film as being "boring" is clearly too stupid to appreciate the novel and therefore its excellent movie adaptation. Because Branagh had the artistic integrity to do a novel like this justice, and you are too stupid to see this, you have apparently demonstrated that your integrity as a movie reviewer is nonexistent and you therefore have no business reviewing movies at all. I detest ignorant, misinformed critics, and wish there was a system of integrity in place in which credible authorities on these matters could vote to have their comments removed from public forums such as this one. Anyone who agrees with me reply to this post with an impassioned "Hear Hear!". The people that disagree with me I'm sure will continue to vomit their uncouth comments all over the internet, so do me a favor and keep your worthless version of an opinion to yourself. I, for one, thank Mr.Branagh for making this treasure for those of us who actually read good books. (or read at all for that matter)..Score: 5/5
Mary ShelleyIn the traditional Branagh styling, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is over the top. Which is not necessarily bad. The costumes are lovely, the special effects are remarkable, and the acting is generally quite good considering some of the ridiculous lines that were to be said. Robert De Niro was a very interesting choice for Frankenstein... he did very good but always felt a little out of place. Kenneth Branagh was successful as Frankenstein and, as always, manages to find the time to take his shirt off. Elizabeth was much more prominent and independent than in the novel. In the hands of a lesser actress the role of Elizabeth would seem gratuitous and unnecessary, but Helena Bonham Carter made her worth watching and more importantly worth caring for. Even with the all star cast, this movie can't overcome its cheesy script and plot. Nonetheless, check it out. There are some heart dropping sequences and real flames.... and a tree gets struck by lighting and it looks very cool. Avoid the birth scene..Score: 3/5

Great Take On FrankensteinFollowing the same gothic formula that was successful for Bram Stoker's Dracula, Kenneth Branagh's Frankenstein has developed a cult following over the years. The gothic atmosphere, music, and cast helps to make the film enjoyable and thrilling. Branagh plays Victor Frankenstein, the main character who re-creates life from dead body parts only to have it haunt him and destroy his life. Branagh's performance is great at times and is at his best towards the end. Helena Bonham Carter is Elizabeth, the love of Victor's life who tries to discover what he created only to have it find her. Carter is great in the film and has a great climax performance. De Niro stars as the Victor's creation, and is easily the best cast member of the film. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein isn't a great film and it isn't a bad film. It's worth a viewing or two..Score: 4/5

StrangeI found this a very strange version of the classic horror story. With all the actors attached I thought it might be pretty good, but instead Director Branagh turned it into a bizarre melodrama, with broad acting, wall-to-wall music, and they certainly never tried to get you to suspend disbelief. I found this version very disappointing and really think it would have been better labelled as a comedy rather than a horror..Score: 2/5
