The Holiday Description

In Nancy Meyers' The Holiday, a romantic comedy from the director of Something's Gotta Give and What Women Want, two women trade homes only to find that a change of address can change their lives. Iris (Winslet) is in love with a man who is about to marry another woman. Across the globe, Amanda (Diaz), realizes the man she lives with has been unfaithful. Two women who have never met and live 6000 miles apart, find themselves in the exact same place. They meet online at a home exchange website and impulsively switch homes for the holiday. Iris moves into Amanda's L.A. house in sunny California as Amanda arrives in the snow covered English countryside. Shortly after arriving at their destinations, both women find the last thing either wants or expects: a new romance. Amanda is charmed by Iris' handsome brother Graham (Law) and Iris, with inspiration provided by legendary screenwriter Arthur (Wallach), mends her heart when she meets film composer Miles (Black).

Busman's Holiday is a British television game show produced by Granada for the ITV network from 26 February 1985 to 28 June 1993.

Contestants were divided into competing teams of three based upon career, at first three teams and later in the series just two teams. They were dressed in their regular work clothes. The winning team went on an exotic holiday where they had to work, to learn how their jobs were performed in other locations.

The Holiday Movie Reviews

  • Love it!

I absolutely love this movie! I watch it every holiday season and would recommend it to anyone.
  • Love It

One of my absolute favorites. Could watch this over and over.
  • Where were you going, Joe DiMaggio?

It is my opinion that THE HOLIDAY has its good qualities and bad qualities. Perhaps, the best of the good qualities is that the narrative structure manages unconsciously--and perhaps, unintentionally--to be honest about how Hollywood, and we as people, tend to overcomplicate the simplest things, and oversimplify the not-so-simple things. How else do you explain Amanda (Cameron Diaz) and Graham (Jude Law) getting more screen-time than Iris (Kate Winslet) and Miles (Jack Black)? Such an example of cinematic activity, of course, spells out the worst of the film's bad qualities as well. The second worst of the bad qualities is that maybe Amanda could have done without Graham, at least as a lover. She simply needs to slow down and look around, AND have time entirely to herself, after all her miserable days of living in the fast lane. Sigh. But I guess beggars can't be choosers, and you can't expect yourself to completely stop looking for somebody who might treat you better, not so soon. On the brighter side, Nancy Myers manages to capture the substance of the goings-on in life, romance, and even friendship through the half involving Iris, who has found out that the man she thought was for her was actually not. She presents and explores Iris's development and growth as a person--and as a women--as a process. NOT as an event! And as for Miles, this role gives Jack Black a well-deserved break from the "loveable loser" days. While the form of Miles' relationship with Maggie is not as complex as that of Iris with Jasper, the substance is very similar. Best of all: Black and Winslet's chemistry is fairly close to genuine. And so is that between Winslet and Eli wallach--in the role of veteran screenwriter Arthur Abbott. Why did Nancy chose to do right on one half and wrong on the other, I...DON'T...KNOW! If it was Nancy's intention to be honset about how little Hollywood knows about this or that, then she has succeeded. Needless to say, Nancy's intentions are annoyingly ambiguous. But don't sell me short! THE HOLIDAY still makes for a good holiday film, and not just for anyone in the mood for love, whatever that may be.
  • I own this 1

  • My fav Holiday movie

I love this sweet , innocent movie. I watch it every year and think it is well cast and the score os beautiful.
  • do NOT listen to critic reviews!

I have no idea what is wrong with critics--this movie is one of my absolute favorites. I have watched it so many times that I can quote the movie right along with the cast as I'm watching it. It's such a feel-good, happy movie that is great to watch any time of the year, not just around the Holiday's. The cast is perfect for the rolls and I agree with another reviewer, Kate Winslet and Jack Black are so good together. This movie is a MUST SEE if you've never seen it.
  • The Holiday

    Christian Munoz
Great Movie!! Perfect for an evening with your girfriend or boyfriend. Light and beautiful crafted.
  • Why Jack Black?

Wish they switched Edward Burns and Jack Black's roles. Pairing Black with Winslet was an insult to her. Can't take Jack Black seriously in anything he does.
  • Not For Rent?

This movie was released in 2007! Why the high price with no option to rent!
  • Typical and Miscast

This wasn't a terrible movie. It was your standard boiler-plate chick flick. As long as you go into it with those expectations you'll be fine and appreciate it for the simple qualities it does have. That said I personally think that Jack Black was terribly miscast in this movie. I almost felt the struggle Kate Winslet went through to try to act as though she was falling for this guy. It was somewhat painful. Not bad but definitely not great.
  • Funny.

    Loved it.
  • The Holiday

This movie is the beat romantic comedy!
  • Delightful

  • i love it

    its my fav movie:)
  • REALLY!!

I don't understand why ROTTEN TOMATOES is dissing on such a great film, when everyone else thinks it's amazing. Apparently they need some new critics. I love this movie and i love the music behind it. It's a awesome movie to watch.
  • A New Holiday Classic!

I accidentally stumbled on this movie two years ago and have watched it several times. I love the chemistry between Jude Law and Cameron Diaz - they are perfect together and Jack Blacks performance was a very pleasant surprise. Kate Winslet - always superb and Eli Wallach was cast perfectly and he turned in a wonderful performance. Predictable story? maybe, but so what? A great story with a happy ending for everyone. I guess I'm just a sentimental fool...
