In one of the most anticipated movies of 1994, boxoffice superstar Mel Gibson ("Lethal Weapon," et. al.) and two-time Academy Award-winner Jodie Foster ("The Accused," "Silence of the Lambs") are a dapper gambler and a seductive con woman in this slick Western based on the classic TV series. James Garner ("Murphy"s Romance," TV's "Rockford Files") -- the original Maverick -- James Coburn ("The Magnificent Seven," "Young Guns II"), Graham Greene ("Northern Exposure") and a slew of country singers co-star in this film by Richard Donner ("Superman," "Lethal Weapon" trilogy). The New York Times calls this "fast, funny, full of action...[it's] "Lethal Weapon" meets "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid." The Hollywood Reporter calls it "a fast-shuffling escapade of antic wit...a delightfully appealing, brainy comedy...[a] royal flush" and Variety says it's "exuberant...a whole new generation is about to discover the charm, wit and fun of Maverick."
In their hands, a deck of cards was the only thing more dangerous than a gun.. Maverick is a gambler who would rather con someone than fight them. He needs an additional three thousand dollars in order to enter a Winner Take All poker game that begins in a few days. He tries to win some, tries to collect a few debts, and recover a little loot for the reward. He joins forces with a woman gambler with a marvelous southern accent as the two both try and enter the game.. Maverick Wiki
Stylish and funny. Keep coming back to this year after year!
This movie is okay but it never really hits any kind of stride. As Maverick was an ongoing TV series, one could have expected sequels, but the fact that there were none tells the story.
This movie is such a fun adventure to watch, you just can't take it too seriously and you will really enjoy it
You see this is how you do a movie adaptation of a TV series. You get yourself a compotent director, a good cast, and a good script. I applaud Richard Donner for making this fun adaptation of the classic 60's TV series. Mel Gibson, before going bat-crap crazy in the 2K's, was a fitting choice for the role of Bret Maverick. I am glad that James Garner, the original Maverick, got to have a part in this film. I was also glad that one of my favorite actors James Coburn was in this film too. Jodie Foster also does great with her role. The story feels like a great adaptation of the original TV series. Now......why didn't Barry Sonnenfield take this film as an example of how to do an adaptation of a TV western when he did the utter fail that is Wild Wild West? (I am seriously hoping for the series to come out on iTunes soon). I recommend this movie to fans of the original 60's TV western and western fans in general. So, check it out.
Great movie for anyone ready for a good laugh. Super good and a not - so - classic storyline. I would reccomend to anyone!!
A had just saw this movie on tv the other day and had to have it cause I fell asleep:) it's is truly the funniest western movie I've ever seen in my life;) everyone should buy it!!!
Great movie! Mel Gibson is hilarious in this! Buy it!
I love this movie and watched it on DVD often. I thought I'd get the digital file here as well but cant understand why so many of the movies on iTunes are $9.99 when they are in the Walmart DVD bargain bin for $3-$8. If its cheap on DVD, it should be cheap here too. Its only a data file for crying out loud.
I first saw this when I was 6 with my dad and we loved everything about it. I'm 13 now and we still repeat lines from it! Great film.
This movie should go down as one of the most fun-filled, playful comedies featuring some of the most classic western character actors ever played. The "Maverick" character in the TV show made his living trying to swindle everyone else with his poker antics...now here everyone else is trying to swindle him! And he gets them back! This is non-stop hilarity at it's best, the cameos from days past will keep you on your toes, and the interplay between Gibson, Garner and Foster are priceless. This is one movie that takes top billing in my library whenever I need a quick "attitude adjustment." This is a movie you will never tire from...Thank you Burt!...er....BRET Maverick!
I have not seen this movie in years....and it is still as awesome as I remember. Some nice witty remarks, A generally good movie.
