This powerful, fact-based absurdity-of-war film stars Kirk Douglas as a commanding officer who defends three scapegoats on trial for a failed offensive that occurred within the French Army in 1916.

Stunningly MovingThere are only a few films or movies that capture the insanity that was the First World War and the brutality that was caused by a European aristocratic military command. Apart from this movie I would recommend the fourth season of Black Adder, which gives an emotionally charged satirical depiction of the war. One of the few things, possibly the only, positive about the general antipathy that the general staff toward the common soldier is that the line officers who were with there with the soldiers became determined to behave more like actual soldiers if they ever became field commanders. Some of these men were Gens. Patton, Montgomery, DeGaul, and Bradley..Score: 5/5

So what...This film is often slow and plodding, with the most memorable aspect being the total lack of sound damping in one of the most echo-ey marble rooms in movie history (making it very difficult to make out what is being said.) Kubrick's most underratedIt may not be his best film (2001 and Dr. Strangelove are better films for my taste), but Paths of Glory isn't one that jumps to people's minds when they first think of Stanley Kubrick. Quite possibly the best WWI film ever made..Score: 5/5
Stanley Kubrick's MasterpieceStanley Kubrick in my opinion is the greatest filmmaker of all time, I can't say I've seen one movie from him that I've truly been dissapointed by. I had mixed feelings about this one at first. It honestly ranks pretty low in comparison to his later fims, however it has a decent storyline and one of Kirk Douglas' best performances in his carrer. Sadly this movie is overall has negitive perspective on the subject of war, getting into depth of man's instablity by being afraid of war. Stanley never quoted this as an anti- war movie but a anti authorian ignorance film. Kubrick here gets into the instability regarding the soldiers psychological perspective of things, as he does the contrary in his Vietnam era war film 1987's Full Metal Jacket. This ranks nothing short of a well made war film invoving the emotions of individuals who are simply psychologically unstable regarding the reality of war. Kirk Douglas plays the key role model of a man who will do everything in his power to support all justice regarding corruption within authority (hence the strong liberalism in the film). Bottom line is that this ranks nothing short of a Kubrickan movie covering facinating psychological depth regarding human minds and behavior..Score: 4/5
Brilliant!A brilliant anti-war movie. The reality of the bewlidering arrogance, stupidity, and fatal carelessness of a General Staff (regardless of nationality) who were, almost to a man, at least 20-30 miles from the trenches. One comment to a reviewer ("400barz"), who determined that the movie portrayed "individuals psychologically unsuited to the realities of war"!!!! Individuals who were for YEARS were subject to orders that would put them directly in the pathes of machine guns, who for years had to put up with the unbearable mud, waterlogged trenches, rats, who bloated on corpses, were the size of small dogs, poison gas, and death!! As this is the 90th anniversary of the Armistice I can safely assume that "400barz" did not serve in the trenches, and perhaps should therefore be more understanding that all human beings come to a point where horror overwhelms the senses - which by the way is NOT the individual tale of the soldiers involved in the movie. Needed to point out that the REALITY of the war IS depicted in the movie!.Score: 5/5
A True Classic for the AgesThe cinematic bookend to "All Quiet on the Western Front", "Paths of Glory" sees WWI from the perspective of a field commander caught between the self-serving motives of high command and the ultimate sacrifices through which the rank and file soldiers are expected to achieve them. While AQ focuses on war in general and on the character and daily lives and deaths of the soldiers, PG zooms in for a tight close-up on the internal politics of WWI, the often inverse relationship between rank and character and the heartless treatment of those who fought it. In neither film is nationality of particular relevance, but just FYI, PG is told from the French perspective and AQ from the German. I'd been given to understand for many years that PG is a pivotal film in the history of cinema and didn't have to think about whether to rent or buy. Having finally seen it I can only repeat this advice, especially for those interested in the earlier work of Kirk Douglas and Stanley Kubrick, the latter of whose dramatic tracking shots and attention to detail make the film a totally immersive experience..Score: 5/5

This film skillfully shows how statistical analyses reduce real human tragedies to abstract concepts with zero emotional impact or sympathy. Paths of Glory is true to lifeI honestly think all colonels have to throw away sentimentality before they become generals. There are no good guys, no idealists at that rank level. Same as politicians of equivalent status. This is an extremely potent war film for its time. Soldiers and the war are portrayed realistically, with all the mythos and naive impressions of war young boys have rudely stripped away. I think the army would still be like this if we did not have television or news reporting injustices done to soldiers. While there are still many injustices done to soldiers by their governments, it is much harder to get away with summary executions and kangaroo courts like the ones portrayed in this film. This film portrays masterfully the politics of war and high command. The higher in rank one rises there are fewer and fewer people one can trust implicitly. Each high commander is seeking to politically out manoeuvre each other. For officers it becomes less about commanding troops and more about entertaining guests at social events.
