Alex Bernier (Heath Ledger) is a member of an arcane order of priests who is sent to Rome to investigate the mysterious death of the head of this order. The body may be of a Sin Eater, a renegade who offers absolution, last rites and therefore a path to heaven outside the jurisdiction of the church. Alex enlists the aid of his old comrade Father Thomas and of a troubled artist (Shannyn Sossamon) upon whom he once performed an exorcism. He soon finds himself plunged directly into the face of unimaginable evil, murder, and ultimately, a fate worse than death.

You either love it or hate it...It seems that the consensus of the reviews are either you love or hate the movie... I am on the love end of the spectrum. I had seen this movie once, and forgotten that I had even seen it. But the second time around, especially with the research that I am doing, I found this movie to be more than I saw the first time around. Yes, the actors are good, but I was able to see past them to get to the heart of the story with its interesting concept of going around the confines of the church to give salvation to those that the church doesn't think deserve salvation. Worth RentingI would've rated this movie 2 stars, but an enjoyable cast bumped it up to 3. Besides Heath, there are 2 other actors from Knight's Tale (the princess and the fat bearded squire). Although interesting, the storyline just doesn't quite cut it. The big "revelation" at the end is so obvious that it seemed strange they even bothered with the final scene. The camera work is rather boring as well. Shooting an entire movie from 2 or 3 basic angles gets a little old. It also bugged me how similar this movie is to 9th Gate with Johnny Depp. In fact, Ledger looks very much like Depp with the scraggly beard they gave him. This was a bad movie, as I see it. I thought it was slow and I could not get into it, I got the idea, I thought it was sweet, but I just thought it was too much. I had to turn it off.
