Director Stanley Kubrick rips the skin from the face of war to expose the dehumanizing effect of the military on the people fed to its emotional meat grinder in Full Metal Jacket. Through the eyes of an 18-year-old recruit--from his first days in the seeming hell of Marine Corps boot camp as his superiors try to strip of him his individuality and re-create him as a Marine, to the hell of the 1968 Tet offensive, Kubrick reveals the damage done to the collective human soul by the inhumanity of war. ExcellentThis came out about the same time as Platoon. Platoon was Hollywood, Full Metal Jacket wasn’t. I saw it in the theatre and remember laughing at much of the first part (boot camp) simply because if I didn’t laugh I’d cry. It’s gut wrenching throughout and not for the faint of heart at any point. The actors are exceptional, in particular Lee Ermey who was brought in to train the actor playing the drill instructor only to end up having Kubrick cast him in the position. W drugiej części filmu akcja przenosi się do Wietnamu. Głównym bohaterem jest Joker, młody rekrut który pracuje jako korespondent wojenny i na własne oczy przekonuje się, czym naprawdę jest walka.
Český Film se odehrává ve dvou stejně dlouhých kapitolách, jejichž hlavním hrdinou je inteligentní voják s přezdívkou Vtipálek. První část se odehrává ve výcvikovém středisku námořní pěchoty v Jižní Karolíně, kde sadistický instruktor Hartman psychicky i fyzicky týrá svěřené nováčky. Ne každý je schopen takový dril přežít a zachovat si zdravé myšlení. Druhá část se již odehrává na vietnamské frontě, kde se i Vtipálek musí uchýlit k tomu nejhoršímu činu.
