Jerry Mulligan is an exuberant American expatriate in Paris trying to make a reputation as a painter. His friend Adam is a struggling concert pianist who's a long time associate of a famous French singer, Henri Baurel. A lonely society woman, Milo Roberts, takes Jerry under her wing and supports him, but is interested in more than his art.

Good but flawed.There's no doubt that Gene Kelly could dance circles around almost anyone else. There's no doubt that Leslie Caron, whose skills are if anything under-utilized here, could do so too. The singing is good, the music is good, and there's no doubt that this movie was ground-breaking in a number of ways. But the plot is a little, shall we say, on the thin side, and the characters aren't really all that believable. The romance between the two main characters feels almost entirely superficial--Gene Kelly's character actually admits, for gosh sake, that he doesn't know a thing about the woman he's supposedly head over heels in love with. And would the characters' rivals actually give up that easily? But hey--I feel like I'm grousing over nothing. Who needs realism? Who needs plot? It's an MGM musical. If it were me, I'd program the computer to just string out the music and dance numbers one right after the other, and skip the plot in between. You'd be watching the best Hollywood dancer at his absolute peak, with some of the best music ever written. Now THAT would be a great movie..Score: 4/5

A ballet with lyrics and a scriptIt's the production numbers that make such a marvel out of this movie, the colours, the costumes, the sets, and, of course, the sensational choreography, which, however, in especially the dream sequences, often enough loses sight of the context - infectious style, in other words, over stock substance.Score: 4/5
A beautiful filmGene Kelly is an American veteran of WWII who has stayed in Paris after the war to pursue his ambition of being a painter. He is not particularly successful until he meets wealthy arts patron Nina Foch who takes a liking to him and his work although there may be more emphasis on the former than the latter. For his part, Kelly has fallen for Leslie Caron, who unbeknownst to him is the fiance of his friend, cabaret singer Georges Guétary. This light, insubstantial plot is buoyed by a flight of incredible songs by George & Ira Gershwin and Kelly's choreography. This is among Kelly's best work in that regard. Caron is, at this early stage in her career, a great dancer, but not much on an actress. Oscar Levant is on hand as Kelly's musician pal and frankly, I have never been able to see what anyone ever saw in him..Score: 4/5
