Brad Pitt stars in an epic tale of passion, heroism, betrayal and war that has been passed from generation to generation since the dawn of civilization--the story of the battle for Troy. A thousand years before the time of Christ, Trojan prince Paris (Orlando Bloom) abducts the legendary Greek beauty Helen, queen of Sparta (Diane Kruger), starting a war led by heroes Achilles (Pitt) and Hector (Eric Bana) that devastates the ancient world.
In year 1250 B.C. during the late Bronze age, two emerging nations begin to clash. Paris, the Trojan prince, convinces Helen, Queen of Sparta, to leave her husband Menelaus, and sail with him back to Troy. After Menelaus finds out that his wife was taken by the Trojans, he asks his brother Agamemnon to help him get her back. Agamemnon sees this as an opportunity for power. They set off with 1,000 ships holding 50,000 Greeks to Troy.

True EpicThere is a reason The Iliad is a timeless epic. If only today's world could produce such beauty, horror, sacrifice, vigilance, courage, honor, greed, revenge... but the great storytellers are gone and we are left with only 2 hour clips to squeeze in our fast paced lives. Hollywood could learn a thing or two from our ancestors; Life is filled with more than one storyline. It's more complex than fitting into a specific genre or a two hour window. Troy is a great representation of Homer's tragedy The Iliad and the movie does a beautiful job making it more "real" than when you had to suffer through reading it in your high school English Composition class. It brings the characters to life and lets you "walk in the time of giants." Every time I watch it, I get something a little different from the story. I highly recommend the Director's Cut, which adds a considerable amount to the movie... although I would not recommend it for young eyes (nudity and gore)..Score: 5/5

UniqueI have to say, out of all of the movies I have ever watched, I was never left with such a feeling of sadness and excitement. This movie is amazing in its entirety, with a huge (and obviously famous) cast, as well as gorgeous special effects. As you watch the movie, you get attracted to most of the characters and get confused as to which side to support. I have been able to always been able to distinguish characters as antagonists and protagonists, but due to the great story line, it was difficult to distinguish which characters I should support. Overall, love this movie, and I find that the length of the directors cut version really contributes to the appreciation of not only the movie itself and all of the amazing details it offered, but also to the story line itself..Score: 5/5

An Epic War Drama Movie Loosely Based On Homer's poem, "Iliad"Wolfgang Petersen's "Troy" is an excellent epic war drama movie loosely based on Homer's poem, "Iliad." The movie plot was well written while including the important details of the original story. The movie has a decent pace not too fast or too slow. The writing is good as far as plot development goes The army special effects, movie sets and the scenery are all very beautiful. The costumes, the armor, the art and the weapons are impressive and stay true to the ancient Greek setting. The Aegean Sea looks so gorgeous. The clashing of swords and smashing of shields are heard so powerful and clear. The war between Ancient Greece and the Trojans is epic in scale and isn't about poetry. The movie dialogue was very good. The cast is overall excellent and delivers wonderful performances. Brad Pitt is awesome as Achilles. Brad Pitt delivers an upstanding performance by giving the right amount of power and strength for his character, Achilles. Eric Bana is terrific by portraying Hector as a noble, brave prince. Sean Bean was born for the role as Odysseus. Peter O'Toole gives a wonderful performance as Priam, the King of Troy. Orlando Bloom is very good as Prince Paris of Troy. Diane Kruger was a brilliant choice for the role as Helen of Troy. Brian Cox is outstanding as villainous King Agamemnon and is so convincing. Brendan Gleeson was excellent as Agamemnon's brother, Menelaus. Rose Byrne was good for her role as Briseis, a priestess and cousin to Hector. Saffron Burrows who plays Andromache gives easily an excellent performance. The lines are well delivered by the cast and their characters are believable. This movie contains some of the most elaborate action sequence. The fight scenes are great. The battle sequence between Hector and Achilles is one of the best choreographed fight scenes in epic war movies. The violence is likewise beautiful with blood and guts galore both on the battlefield and in single combat. The music score is very amazing. "Troy" is very action-packed and beautifully well-made. A very good, absorbing, entertaining movie with top-notch performances and a compelling story. You'll be connected with the magnificent and timeless qualities of the Homeric universe. Still one of the greatest epic movie drama ever made with Ancient Greek elements..Score: 5/5
A First Rate Epic!Troy is very roughly based on The Iliad by Homer. So let me start by saying if you've read the book and you're a fan, but you haven't seen the movie yet, don't. If you teach a literature class that is currently reading The Iliad and you want to show your class this, don't. Out of all the book to movie adaptations I've seen, this one is changed up the most. People die at the wrong places and people who should've died live to the end of the movie. I will say that if you want to buy either this, or the theatrical version, get this, because I personally think The Director's Cut to any movie should be released to theaters, because I believe they should tell the whole story and not cut corners. You get to know the characters more, it builds more tension, and because of the additional scenes it leaves you on an emotional rollercoaster. Also if you saw the theatrical and you fell in love with the score that James Horner provided (like I did), you will be dissappointed to find that score is not in this one. They changed the music up in order to match it with the additional scenes by putting songs in different places and even taking music from other films and incorporating them into this, (ex. when Achilles and Patriclous are practicing combat they play music from The Count Of Monte Cristo, and when Achilles and Hector face off they play music from Planet Of The Apes). However, the film still remains to be a classic epic much like Braveheart and Gladiator, and with an all-star cast (Brad Pitt as Achilles, Eric Bana as Hector, Orlando Bloom as Paris, Brian Cox as Agamemnon, Brendan Gleeson as Menelaus, Peter O'Toole as Priam, featuring Julie Christie as Achilles's mother, with Garrett Hedlund as Patriclous, and Tyler Mane as Ajax), you have to at least consider watching the film. This film, in my opinion is forever Classic!.Score: 5/5
READ FOR A SOLID AND RELIABLE REVIEW!I think that in this particular case Hollywood did their best with the movie Troy. For those ignorant individuals this is about the Iliad written by homer, and quite frankly they followed TO THE T! Almost every aspect of the Iliad I thought. The movie and book is suppose to be about the TRAGEDY OF ACHILLES! Now I do want to add that some important seems were left out. Like Hera,Athena, and Aphrodite fighting over the apple and paris(being on mt. Ida at the time) decides who gets the apple at Thetis and Peleus' wedding. Aphrodite wins because she promises Paris the most beautiful woman in the world which of course is HELEN queen of Sparta. They included a good portion of scenes and lines from the book. Like the tension between Agamemnon and Achilles. Or even how a lot of the gods get involved with the fight. Picking sides and rooting for Trojan and Greek warriors to win. IF YOU READ THE BOOK, OR STUDY THE ILLIAD. You will find a deeper meaning of the movie then just some blood, killing, and some war. After studying the book and what homer shows us relating Achilles to aristotles poetics I can confidently say that this is a fantastic movie!.Score: 5/5
