An attempted political overthrow in Northern Italy fails, causing most of the mercenaries hired by the coup leaders to flee. For Martin (Rutger Hauer) this is not the case, he intends to rob his duplicitous former employer Arnolfini (Fernando Hillbeck). Using a stolen religious artifact as a talisman, Martin raises his own army. He later abducts Arnolfini's future daughter-in-law Agnes (Jennifer Jason Leigh), who evades gang rape by professing eternal devotion to her captor. Along with a deadly plague, weeks of plunder and destruction follow.
Late at night, a woman is kidnapped by an unknown assailant and taken back to his blood-spattered dungeon, where he turns her into a "flower of blood and flesh" through a series of dismemberment and evisceration.

If you’re looking for an X-rated good timeThis movie is directed by the same man who was responsible for Robocop and Starship Troopers. Paul Verhoeven directed this before coming to Hollywood as his first English movie and is a good indication of what he was to become. Flesh+Blood holds absolutely nothing back when it comes to the medieval customs of rape, murder, and the plague. It stars Rutger Hauer, who is decent, and plays a good enough half villain, half alright guy. Jennifer Jason Leigh kind of wallows with the other B-list actors, but she really does have some parts that shine. It’s interesting the things that she goes through in this movie, simply because I can’t imagine another actor/actress doing the same. She said while filming her nude scenes in the castle, her feet and hands would turn blue. It’s worth seeing if you want a good laugh at the exploitative nature of the medieval times. Try not to take the movie TOO seriously (although at times, that’s difficult, mainly some scenes where Leigh’s agony is too much to take lightly)..Score: 4/5
Flesh and BloodSeems to me an extra 2 bucks is cheap for the privilege of hanging out at home in your jammies! The movie is good fun, especially for Rutger Hauer fans - he's at his most gorgeous in this film!.Score: 4/5
Be a little more competitiveOK, I really want to see this movie but I go to Barnes and Nobles and find I can buy it for $8 but itunes sells it for $10. Come on itunes. This is the age of Netflix. Wish itunes would make their prices more competitive..Score: 1/5
ClassicI found this originally waaaay back on VHS called The Rose and the Sword. Same movie, different title. Fantastic flick. The biological warfare trick alone is worth the price of admission. Sets, costumes, cast all contribute to making this a very immersive film..Score: 5/5
