A dutiful robot named Robby speaks 188 languages. An underground lair provides astonishing evidence of a populace a million years more advanced than Earthlings. There are many wonders on Altair-4, but none is greater or more deadly than the human mind. Forbidden Planet is the granddaddy of tomorrow, a pioneering work whose ideas and style would be reverse-engineered into many cinematic space voyages to come. Leslie Nielsen portrays the commander who brings his spacecruiser crew to the green-skied Altair-4 world that's home to Dr. Morbius (Walter Pidgeon), his daughter (Anne Francis), the remarkable Robby...and to a mysterious terror. Featuring sets of extraordinary scale and the first all- electronic musical soundscape in film history, Forbidden Planet is in a movie orbit all its own.
Starship C57D travels to planet Altair 4 in search of the crew of spaceship "Bellerophon," a scientific expedition that has been missing for 20 years, only to find themselves unwelcome by the expedition's lone survivor and warned of destruction by an invisible force if they don't turn back immediately.

Anne Francis is always beautiful and such a talent..Walter Pidgeon is fantastic as Dr Morbius. There is even Earl Holliman that turns in a great comic performance as the cook (most of his career was in Television). Check out Warren Stevens (another great TV career) playing 'Lt. 'Doc' Ostrow'. Bad Bad Bad procedures, leadership, and policies !OK - a Military Ship is warned by the planet side to turn back - the first thing they would do is ask for a Risk Assessment, what is the threat? Second - um - close the ramps and door - who lands a space ship and forgets to close the outer hatches? Button it up! Third - They find one guy who says everyone else died - instant murder suspect. Forth - The robot - just get a copy of the construction plans and tech specifications, and take that back to Earth. Fifth - the moment the scientist shows you the alien database, you simply ask to have your own science guy come in and look at it, and begin recording all of the data - in a few hours - a wealth of knowledge is recorded - let someone else figure it out back on Earth - just copy all you can. Sixth - keep your hands off his daughter for at least 5 minutes and focus on the mission! and Finally - everyone should stop being stuck up jerks and work cooperatively - as best they can - like in StarGate! The energy/matter converter tech was not bad - just the user interface! Replace the 'mind reader' with a simple laptop / keyboard interface - a bit easier to control than peoples random thoughts!.Score: 3/5
A True Cult ClassicThis has long been my favorite science fiction movie. Though the special effects certainly do reflect the age of the film, they are not at all bad. The story, however, is what caught me and has kept me a fan my whole life. Compared to a large number of other films from the same era, this movie has a much more intelligent and philosophical plot line. Compared to modern science fiction movies, the same still holds true. The acting is good, though very representative of the production year. I highly recommend this to fans of Sci-Fi, especially if you like movies like Contact, Close Encounters, etc..Score: 5/5
The prototype for all great science fiction films!Forbidden Planet is one of my favorite films of all time. Get past the lurid title and poster art. This is a thoughtful, entertaining story about the risks of pushing the boundaries of man's knowledge, and the need to figure human frailty into our calculations as we build a technological society. Leslie Nielsen, Anne Francis and Walter Pidgeon -- these great talents are all at the top of their game here. Forbidden Planet sports the first fully electronic musical score ever in a major motion picture, and features special effects that were, for their time, the best ever seen. The story of an obsessed scientist, his lonely daughter, and the determined captain who has come to bring them rescue leads to a confrontation with the worst and the best within the human soul. That story is as well-told and powerful today as it was in 1956 when the film was released -- or in Shakespeare's day when he examined the same story in his play, The Tempest. Must-see!.Score: 5/5

Watch this a lot!Saw this at a drive-in outside Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1954. We were surrounded by reddish brown arid land and blanketed with a star studded indigo sky; it was a perfect film for the location and I was hooked. I was nine and I've loved science fiction since then. This film was the best Science Fiction film of its time. The depth of the story may be surprising; I certainly didn't get it at the age nine. The Walter Pidgen character sees the truth about the former residents of the planet, the Krell, but cannot see that he too has become victim to what befell them. There is a truth to this film that applies to everyone: there is, within everyone, a selfish, animalistic nature that can destroy all held dear if it is not recognized and dealt with. Quite a statement for a little 1954 science fiction film. Oh, it's is in wonderful color too -- not common for sci-fi back then. No gore, no frantic action. The sound track is amazing, made entirely up of sounds, not melodies, no music. Brilliant and innovative for it's time. I loved the sounds. I loved the monster. I love the film. The SoundtrackFor those of you who are music buffs, this was really the first ENTIRELY electronic movie score. With "tonalities" by Louis and Bebe Baron utilizing a ring modulator, this is the movie that single handedly decided what spaceships, electronic force fields, futuristic sliding doors, etc. were supposed to sound like almost a decade before moog synths were even invented. Superlative Sci-FiUltimately, this movie is a product of it's time, and it shows - but it strives for so much more, and, to a great extent, succeeds. The screenplay is actually quite well written and intelligent (and it owes a great debt to Shakespeare's "The Tempest"), the production design, sets, visual effects and animation are just astounding for 1956 (especially when we venture into the Krell "machine"); it's hampered by stodgy direction and fairly typical 1950's-style acting, but all in all this is still quite the superlative sci-fi, even when compared to the best of what modern technology and film-making has to offer.
