Thrilling performances by Paul Newman, Elizabeth Taylor and Burl Ives make this adaptation of Tennessee Williams's story about a wealthy plantation owner succumbing to cancer one of the most acclaimed movies in history.
An alcoholic ex-football player drinks his days away, having failed to come to terms with his sexuality and his real feelings for his football buddy who died after an ambiguous accident. His wife is crucified by her desperation to make him desire her: but he resists the affections of his wife. His reunion with his father—who is dying of cancer—jogs a host of memories and revelations for both father and son.

Exceptional Writing, Acting, & Production of Real Life IssuesMendacity, lies, that we tell ourselves, speak to others, and live with hurt us. This is the "heat" that not only Maggie "the Cat" (Taylor) but all the characters must work through in the less-than 24 hours the movie depicts. We are these people. We just have air conditioning! Ives reprises his role from the Broadway version with all the largeness you would expect from a character named "Big Daddy." While he must grapple with news that forces him to face his own lies, he is also relentless in getting his son, Brick (Newman), to face the mendacity that is threatening Brick's marriage to Maggie. Having lived in the South and been married to a Southerner, these characters are all believable, right down to their funny names, though people who cannot remember living without air conditioning may have trouble relating and find this dated. I watched my 24-hour rental twice! One line of dialogue grabbed my attention such that I wrote it down: "Life ain’t just a bunch of high spots…. Heroes in the real world live 24 hours a day, not just two hours in a [football] game…. The truth is pain and sweat and payin’ bills and makin’ love to a woman you don’t love anymore. Truth is dreams that don’t come true and nobody puts your name in the paper till you die," Big Daddy. Later, I read that Taylor lost her husband (#3, Mike Todd) in a private plane crash that she was supposed to be on during filming. Very tough for her to "go on with the show," but she did and was nominated for Best Actress..Score: 5/5
Irresistably great!!!Kept my attention, and the ending was priceless! I can identify with Maggie, her love is strong and she stayed on the roof despite the heat. Good, considering....They changed a lot of the content to fit the production codes back in the early 60s. so its not exactly like the original play: a lot of the plot has been mixed up. it is filled with great performances though, and the last minute of the movie is just so amazingly amazing it makes my heart stop. so buy it! what are you waiting for!!!.Score: 4/5

A bit hurt by Production Code changesA phenomenal, classy production of a play that's really badly neutered due to the interference of the Production Code. The whole center of the plot ... why Brick and Maggie are estranged and why Brick is drinking himself to death ... is quite frankly rendered more than a little nonsensical. That said, this is an amazing ensemble cast. Burl Ives in particular, reprising his role from the Broadway production, is so good I wish he'd acted in films more often. Richard Brooks does not get much praise these days, but he was a fine director, especially at making literate films for adult audiences..Score: 4/5
Maggie the Cat..One of the most sensual and visceral movies of all time. This is Elizabeth Taylor at her very best. Paul Newman is the perfect brooding foil to a yearning and desperate Maggie. The movie emits a sticky Southern heat paired with hot tempers, greed and a deep desire for human connection and understanding. This is the absolute ideal movie to watch on a hot summer night with a cool drink. Paul Newman radiates physical beauty throughout but portrays a painful image of a man denying his true feelings because of blatant pride and stubborness. You will note that Elizabeth's Maggie only makes one costume change throughout as the movie takes place over one day. Pay close attention to the scene where Paul Newman is in the bathroom, unable to resist Maggie's scent on her nightgown that hangs on the back of the door. It is these subtleties that make this movie worth watching. I highly reccomend it and consider it one of my personal top 10 movies never to miss..Score: 5/5
