Relevant for TodayI watched this movie for the first time many many years ago. In fact, I was just a little girl and enamored with the very rebellious Katherine Hepburn. I found the mysterious relationship she and Spencer Tracy had intriguing to say the least. What I did not pay attention to was the message of the movie. It was on television recently and I sat down and watched the movie again for the first time in years. I was struck by just how much voters could learn today from the movie. I highly recommend it for all 2012 potential voters. Unfortunately, I don't foresee the ending of this movie as a reality for today. Der Bingle's fondness for the racetrack is evident throughout this story of a man who abandons the mansion for the stable. And the songs attest to the film's unbridled spirit. There's no need for an address, three square meals a day or lick when you can stay "Someplace On Anywhere Road," bake a "Sunshine Cake" or bet the nest egg on what "The Horse Told Me." Many of the 1934 stars reprise their roles here, and Oliver Hardy (minus sidekick Stan Laurel) has a memorable bit as a railbird desperate for a winner.

When Frank Capra decided to film the novel "The Gentleman From Montana", he ran into an obstacle Director Rouben Mamoulian owned the rights to the story. Unwilling to sell, Mamoulian eventually traded the material to Columbia on the condition that he be allowed to direct Golden Boy. As Capra began working on the film, now called Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, it was suggested that Gary Copper, the star of Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, take the lead. Capra selected Jimmy Stewart instead and the film solidified Stewart's movie career, garnering him his first Academy Award® nomination. Receiving a total of eleven 1939 Oscar® nominations (including Best Picture and Best Director), and winning one (Best Motion Picture Story), Mr. Smith Goes To Washington is considered one of Capra's, Stewart's and Columbia's finest films. It also marked the end of an era. It was Capra's final film for the studio.
