A U.S. Navy Captain and his crew are just beginning to enjoy 48 hours of leave when they receive word to immediately return to duty. On a top-secret assignment, they must disguise themselves as Nazis and infiltrate a severely damaged Nazi U-boat. Once on board, they are to steal the Nazi's top-secret decoding device and sink the sub before the Germans catch on to what's really happening. Their mission is more dangerous and frightening than anything they could have ever imagined, but one which has the power to turn the tide of battle.

In the midst of World War II, the battle under the sea rages and the Nazis have the upper hand as the Allies are unable to crack their war codes. However, after a wrecked U-boat sends out an SOS signal, the Allies realise this is their chance to seize the 'enigma coding machine'.

U-571For a movie I had never heard of, this was a dynamite movie! My son is a Lt. on the USS Georgia submarine (SSGN 729(Blue)) so any movies concerning subs and them being shot at (Crimson Tide, Hunt for Red October) always gives me a little sick feeling. Český Jednou z klíčových epizod 2. světové války byla snaha spojenců o rozluštění německého šifrovacího kódu Enigma. Na jaře 1942 se k poškozené německé ponorce U-571 blíží americké plavidlo, přestrojené za přivolanou německou zásobovací ponorku. Cílem jeho posádky a přepadového komanda je zmocnit se šifrovacího stroje Enigma. Do puntíku naplánovaná akce se však, jak už to bývá, zvrtne ve vynucenou improvizaci. Režisér Jonathan Mostow odvedl pozoruhodnou práci při natáčení ve stísněných prostorách (i když snímek vznikal samozřejmě v dekoracích postavených v římské Cinecittě) a s náležitým napětím ukázal fungování posádky v mezních situacích. Hlavní roli zástupce, poručíka Tylera, který se stává velitelem v kritickém okamžiku, ztělesnil Matthew McConaughey. Kombinace skutečných událostí a fikce vzbudila po uvedení Ponorky U-571 značnou nelibost zejména v Británii, neboť film tiše opomíjí skutečnost, že první Enigmu ukořistili Britové (což je dokumentováno v závěrečných titulcích).

Hrvatski Godina je 1942. Amerika je ušla u rat, ali joj veliki problem u namjeri da pomogne europskim saveznicima predstavljaju njemačke snage u Atlantiku. Poručnika Andrewa Tylera muči problem, jer poručnik Dahlgreen je spriječio njegovo dugo željeno unaprjeđenje.
