What great movie making is all about....IIf you watch this movie and miss the possibility you are watching genius, it's OK. Jeunet constantly creates an uncertainty in the viewer that makes you ask yourself if you just witnessed that level of detail or beauty or visual overload you thought you did. “Eye candy” is an understated way to describe his movies.

Deutsch Mathilde und Manech sind seit ihrer Kindheit unzertrennlich. Als der erste Weltkrieg die Verlobten voneinander trennt und Mathilde mit der Todesnachricht Manechs konfrontiert wird, will sie nicht daran glauben. Sie folgt Augenzeugenberichten, die ihr erzählen, Manech sei zusammen mit vier weiteren Kameraden wegen Selbstverstümmelung zum Tode verurteilt worden. Mit Vollstreckung des Urteils wurden die fünf Gefangenen in das Niemandsland zwischen den Fronten geworfen. Eine Chance, aus diesem Trümmerfeld lebendig zu entkommen, scheint gleich Null. Doch Mathilde glaubt fest an das Überleben ihres Geliebten. Denn wäre er tot, so sagt sie sich, dann würde sie das spüren. Und so leistet sie ganze Detektivarbeit und wandelt auf den Spuren der Vergangenheit, die die anderen um sie herum so gerne verdrängen würden und die sie letzten Endes auf ein Geheimnis stoßen lassen, das die fünf ehemals Verurteilten umgibt.
