Edward Woodward stars as Sergeant Howie, a naive young police officer sent to Summerisle, a secluded island off the coast of Scotland, to investigate the disappearance of a young girl named Rowan. When he arrives there, he finds a very tight-knit community that is mistrustful and hostile to outsiders. Soon, Howie begins to realize that the town might be a strange pagan cult, one given to unbridled sexuality and possible human sacrifice. Seeking an audience with the oddly civilized Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee), Howie hopes to get to the bottom of the mystery, but instead he finds something more shocking than he could have ever imagined.
Police sergeant Neil Howie is called to an island village in search of a missing girl whom the locals claim never existed. Stranger still, however, are the rituals that take place there.

Classic Cult movie about Pagans being co-opted by ChristiansAnd this time, the Pagans win! This was a 70's B-movie and it shows. Still, excellent songs, and a decent depiction of a society that is practicing the Old Religion as it was done in pre-Christian times. And yet, it's not worked this year to help the trees bloom, so they will have a good crop? So what's next? I'm hoping for a good sequel to this from the director. There's a great book all about the movie and how it was filmed. Britt Eckland is charming, Edward Woodward (may he rest in peace) plays a teriffic self-righteous prig of a man who chooses his fate. He's given chances and encouragement to leave the island, and even the innkeeper's daughter tries to make him sleep through the ceremony, to no avail. He is there by choice. Truly shows how people choose their fates. Honestly, if you are a Pagan, buy this movie and watch it with your Pagan friends and cheer them on at the Maypole, having outdoor pleasure in the graveyard, and all the other wonderful pagan practices shown in this film. A beautiful Film. I recommend watching it at least twice.I'm not sure what standards the bad reviews are holding this film up against. It's a great flick. I think some people are not used to the slow moving quality of the picture, compared to today's fast-paced, wiz-bang special effects with blood and guts of the modern horror genre. It's a slow burn of a film. ***SPOILER ALERT*** I admit, I didn't find it jump-out-of-my-seat "scary", but more disconcerting about the nature of the human condition and the tribal mentality. The greatest horror in the film is people's behavior towards other people. I watched it twice, and I enjoyed it more the second time, as I knew that the film was more of a puzzle to begin with, and I noticed things I hadn't earlier. I also recommend watching with subtitles, sometimes the accents are a bit hard to understand. [Also, another reviewer here mentioned that they apparently cut out a scene in the beginning of the film, that establishes Howie (the cop) as a virgin. I watched the blu-ray version of this movie and that scene is also missing on the latest blu-ray version. However, I do not think it confuses the viewing much at all, since the movie begins by establishing that Howie is a seriously pious/religious man (a Catholic), and midway through the film his virginity is pretty well confirmed in another scene.].Score: 5/5
Wicker ManGreat movie. It's unfortunate that the full version is not on here, but this is still an astounding viewing experience. This is one of the best films of all time, and I'm glad it's finally on iTunes. Great film..Score: 5/5
AWFULThis was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. The acting is so painfully bad it's borderline unwatchable. The plot twist is beyond absurd and it all culminates in the most stupid, horribly acted, terribly directed finale. I lost two hours of my life watching this. Don't make the same mistake..Score: 1/5

A Harmonious Interlude of Horror and Societal CommentaryBetween commenting on the role of religion and conflicting ideologies in society and integrating a masterful musical score, you'd think that "Wicker Man" would have it's hands full. However the film still maintains its status today as one of the most terrifying and suspenseful thrillers ever created. The interwoven urgency of the possible evil doings at hand as well as those by humanity as a whole make for a movie that not only will drop jaws, but also set minds into motion. Magnet's soundtrack workings make for such a stirring addition that the film often walks the line of treading into musical territory, most notably with the beautiful "Willow's Song." Forget the awful remake- go back to the roots of this film and realize what true horror is all over again..Score: 5/5
Burn it at the stakeThis was one of the worst movies I've seen in a long time, and that's saying something. If you want to see Britt Ekland dance around naked, then this is the film for you. Otherwise, the music is horrible, it's not creepy or scary, it feels like a 60s throwback hippy movie, and the acting, for a decent cast, is horrendous. For the time it may have been racy, but now, it's just bad..Score: 1/5

Enjoyed itI had heard many a story about this film and decided to check it out. I can say the movie was worth while. Those who wrote bad reviews are those who only like popcorn flicks which this film is not. It is from the 70s so don't expect award winning acting. It makes you wonder and think, and despite what others may say, the ending is one of my favorites of all time. Worth at least renting..Score: 4/5
