A Christmas Carol

A Christmas Carol Summary and Synopsis

In this adaptation of Charles Dickens's classic tale, an elderly miser learns the error of his ways on Christmas Eve when he is visited by ghosts from Christmases past, present and future. Starring Reginald Owen ("Mrs. Miniver"). Soon to be available in a new, stunning, colorized version! Miser Ebenezer Scrooge is awakened on Christmas Eve by spirits who reveal to him his own miserable existence, what opportunities he wasted in his youth, his current cruelties, and the dire fate that awaits him if he does not change his ways. Scrooge is faced with his own story of growing bitterness and meanness, and must decide what his own future will hold: death or redemption. A Christmas Carol Wiki

- Best performance of the story5 star

Great film and cast for 1938, a must have for your holiday collection.

One of the best classic Christmas Carols ever made. I also love the one with George C. Scott too. God Bless you all, and have a Merry Christmas, while watching this one.

- Colorized version4 star

Just curious For years iTunes was saying they are coming out with a Colorized Version, I wonder if it’s ever going to happen.

- shortened film3 star

I love this version but was very disappointed that Apple shortened it. you'll note it's only 1 hour and 8 minutes. some scenes are missing - not great for 14 bucks! a disappointment!

- Get The Alistair Sim Version!5 star

Though this is a fine version of the story, iTunes must get the 1951 film starring Alistair Sim. That's the best!

- If I could work my will...5 star

I'd take the Scrooge, the Fred, and the Cratchet family from this movie and put them in place of the ones in the Alistair Sim version of "Scrooge", which I think is from 1951 - and unfortunately not available on iTunes. The characters in this version are excellent, but the story in the Sim version is better and has more of the material from the book. I think that would be the best version of A Christmas Carol/Scrooge. But since i can't do that I'll stick with this one as the best available IMHO. It gets the spirit of the book right and that's what's most important after all.

- The best one of all.... 🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄5 star

This version is my all time favorite. I have seen most of the newer versions but this is the one I return to each holiday season. Though not entirely true to Dickens work it best portrays the message he was sending to his readers. A wonderful portrayal of Scrooge by Reginald Owen. Gene Lockhart and Terry Kilburn are excellent in their roles. A heartwarming film.

- My 3rd favorite version of this story5 star

I first caught this wonderful film on cable while I was staying with my Grandma in New Jersey many years ago. At the time I hadn't yet seen either the Alistair Sim version, my #1, and the Disney version #2, starring a motion-captured Jim Carrey was 20 years away. Reginald Owens plays a great version of Scrooge, and to those saying only 69 minutes? Study your film history: most movies of the 30's were under 90 minutes. Highly recommended!

- A holiday tradition 🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄5 star

I have viewed this movie numerous times since childhood. It is still my favorite version of the movie. Reginald Owen is an excellent Scrooge who brings out the "bah" in "Bah humbug"! After I watched it this last time, rented the book on iBooks. I have forgotten how many times I have read it. A true holiday tradition.

- This is not the version to see1 star

Hokey and way edited from original story. The sets are nice but the one to see is the one with Alistair Simms from 1951. Produced in England.

- Only 69 Minutes?1 star

Only 1 hour and 9 minutes? Are you kidding me? Don't bother!

- Haunting5 star

I thought Ann Rutherford was perfect as the ghost of Christmas past, and June Lockhart good as one of the Cratchit daughters.

- Me and my mom ❤❤❤❤5 star

Me and my mom love ❤❤❤❤❤❤ this movie. WE THINK EVERY ONE SHOULD WATCH THIS MOVIE.

- Everyone should see this5 star

Awe-inspriing against greed!

- Best movie ever!5 star

I loved it I think my favorite character is Jacob Marley it's awesome a christmas carol is my favorite movie : )

- Where is the colorized version?5 star

I love this movie, but I am wondering...where is the stunning colorized version? You have been advertising that for more than two years. It's still not here. Unlike many, I like the colorized versions of these older movies and would like to purchase it in addition to the B&W version I have already purchased.

- The first version of "A Christmas Carol" Movie...5 star

This was the first movie made about the annual reading of Chrles Dickens Christmas, "A Christmas Carol" with Lionel Barrymore reading the role of Mr. Scrooge. Due to a broken hip, Lionel Barrymore was unavailable to make the first movie and Reginald Owens played an amazing role as the man we all remember as the original Mr. Scrooge. There are many versions, some better than others, but the Cratchit family played by real members of the Lockhart family is by far the best! We all have our own personal favorites, but this is mine. May the peace and love of the season no matter how you choose or choose not to celebrate be upon all of you and have a very Merry Christmas!!!

- Not true to Dicken's classic1 star

A Christmas Carol is my all- time favorite Christmas story but this version takes too many liberties with the story. One can't improve upon Dickens. Better are the versions with Alistair Sim and George C. Scott.

- A true clasic5 star

This is the best Christmas Carol made, it has a wonderful message that one can cchange and improve your lot in life. Good acting, You can watch this anytime. The one with Regional Owens is also a great one I have both and this one is the Bomb.

- not my favorite version1 star

this has to be my LEAST favorite version next to the version staring George C. Scott

- The best version3 star

If you're looking for a Christmas carol, this is it with Reginal Owens.

- A family tradition!5 star

One of my very fav movies. It is a family tradition to watch this film at Christmas time and that's because my great grandfather (Gene Lockhart) who plays Mr. Crachit, my great grandmother (Kathleen Lockhart) who plays Mrs. Crachit, and my grandmother (June Lockhart) who plays one of the Crachit children are in it. It would be nice to see iTunes add June Lockhart to the cast names on the page. Little known fact, this was my grandmother's FIRST movie role!

- One of the Best5 star

I love this version because it is one of the warmest. Bob Cratchet's family is wonderfully portrayed, and truly seem grateful for everything they receive. I watch this one every Christmas!

I love this version. Reginald Owen is awesome as Scrooge! This is a must have for your Christmas movie library!
