"Superstar is a super-film""Jesus Christ...Superstar! Are you as good as they say you are?" The answer is yes, this film is truly amazing. Based on the Andrew Lloyd Webber rock opera this movie focuses on the last week of the life of Christ and the events leading up to his passion. The film not only looks at Jesus and his point of view but, also focuses on the perspective of Judas Iscariot, Jesus's betrayer and his inner conflict (as represented brilliantly by some strong symbolism) Ted Neely gives an outstanding performance as Christ and gives the character much needed strength and dignity. Carl Anderson also gives an unbeatable performance as Judas. The rest of the cast is magnificent, most notably Yyvonne Elman as Mary Magdaline with her performance of "I Don't Know How to Love Him" Norman Jewison does a great job of conveying strong emotion in each character with his great directing and camera work. Even some sutle scenes can be heart-breaking in this film. The songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber are amazing and do work well with each other, and while some scenes are silly (Like King Herod's Song) the rest of the film is amazing and very moving..Score: 5/5

UghSo bad. (I was born in the mid-70’s.) No resurrection. “He’s just a man.” No healings. And no attempt to show how those stories got passed on if he didn’t *actually* do those things. You can’t have it both ways. Either he did them. Fine. Or he didn’t. Fine, but explain where the miracles came from. Guaranteed they weren’t made up out of whole cloth for kicks and giggles. They MEAN something. But not according to this movie. Tired. Old. Tired. Weak. ENTIRELY SUNG. And tired. too bad really..Score: 1/5
So bad that itOkay .. JCS is ALW and Tim Rice's most brilliant piece, but the concept album puts the movie soundtrack to shame. The movie itself, was visionary, but Ted Neely ruins it for me. Except for a moment of sincerity during GESTHEMANE, in the rest he is just plain awful. Judas is amazing, and the rest of the cast fine. The cinematography is great. The dancing, well, you just gotta love it! It's so incredibly bad and campy that it makes it INCREDIBLE! The dancing in SIMON ZEALOTES is to die for, as is during SUPERSTAR. They just don't dance like that anymore!!!! I felt like I was taken back to the mid 1970s variety TV shows. I hope the 2012 remake to SUPERSTAR being made by Marc Platt Productions treats the material with a bit better casting, but I wonder if the dancing and setting will work in whatever concept they come up with in the remake. we'll see, but i'm sure Jesus will be better then Ted Neely's! My favorite line: "Buddha was were he was at, is he where you are?, could Mohammad move the mountain or was that just PR?".Score: 5/5

A great film.If you remove the religion from the story, you're left with myriad great performances in a very compelling film. The story is told through several songs, and the audio quality is such that you can clearly follow the dialogue. The selection of voices is one of the most remarkable collections ever assembled. Ted Neely is just one of many. In the end, this is a story of finding the courage of one's convictions - or not. Critics be damned, this remains one of my all time favourites..Score: 5/5
