Just incredibleDiana Ross is nothing short of perfect; her vocal abilities and her acting were stupendous in this film. Michael Jackson clearly was the perfect balance for her. This film not only presents distinguished talent, but it also poses a head-on response to some of the issues cluttering the times. Race was an issue, and this group of people came together (from the Broadway play AND the film) and showed the world what African Americans can do, and moreover, what HUMANS can do. This film defeated a barrier and broke down a stereotype, and for that, this movie deserves an audience. 5/5 stars, for the rest of my life..Score: 5/5

A truly awful movie. This movie bombed when it came out. I went to see it in a theatre only to walk out thirty minutes into it. Years later I sat through the whole ponderout thing on dvd and realized I should have left twenty nine minutes before I did. While it does have some good songs everything else about this movie is horrible. From the production design to the special effects and the acting everything is sub par. Don't even get me started on Diana Ross who is more then a decade to old for the part. She alone is a big part of the failure of this movie..Score: 1/5

That Uneasy FeelingThis movie version of the popular Broadway musical should have been a spectacular success; Diana Ross had proven herself an effective and bankable leading lady with the twin successess of MAHOGANY and LADY SINGS THE BLUES, the affable Ted Ross reprised his acclaimed stage role as the Cowardly Lion, and director Sidney Lumet had helmed many a classic by this point in his career. Add Richard Pryor and a seemingly limitless budget to realize the picture's extraordinary production design, and THE WIZ must have seemed like a "can't miss" project, yet this turned out to be one of the biggest box-office busts of the 1970's. So what went wrong? Viewing the film in retrospect, one can't escape the ever-present creepiness of Michael Jackson's Scarecrow; we may be in Oz, but the notorious horrors of Neverland Ranch are never far away. Funnyman Nipsy Russell makes a charming Tin Man, and Diana Ross successfully reinvents the character of Dorothy as a sheltered school teacher; along with Ted Ross's cool yet Cowardly Lion, they make for an ingratiating trio -- all that's missing is a Scarecrow that doesn't leave us feeling uneasy, and a class act like Sammy Davis, Jr. would have fit the bill here perfectly. Sadly, it was not to be; THE WIZ lost a bundle, effectively ending the First Lady of Motown's film career and striking a serious blow to the future of the traditional Hollywood musical..Score: 3/5

Ease On Down...While the idea of an all-African American version of the Wizard of Oz tale may not be palatable to some, rent this (or buy it) on the strength of the musical performances alone. Diana Ross was admittedly a little long in the tooth for the ingenue role, but you'll forget that as soon as you hear her sing "Be A Lion". See Michael Jackson at the height of his performance greatness as he performs "You Can't Win", and be reminded what a entertainment force he used to be before he descended into madness. Solid performances by Nipsey Russell and the inimitable Ted Ross round out an amazingly talented cast. The dance numbers are astonishing (particularly "Can't You Feel A Brand New Day"), and even though there are quite a few weak moments in the plot, the performances more than make up for it. The 70s was an interesting time for African American cinema. This movie serves as a case study of the highs and lows of that period. Definitely worth the download price and time..Score: 4/5
