Coalwood, West Virginia, 1957. Working in the coal mines is an inescapable way of life in this small town. When high schooler Homer Hickam, Jr. (Jake Gyllenhaal) sees the Sputnik satellite in the night sky, he dares to break free of the mines and reach for the stars. Jednoho dne zahlédne na obloze přelétat první sovětskou družici Sputnik. Začne se zajímat o rakety, a dokonce se díky tomu spřátelí s opovrhovaným "šprtem" Quentinem. Spolu se dvěma dalšími kamarády pak začnou amatérsky konstruovat malé rakety. První pokusy jsou však zoufalé. Aby získali více znalostí, pustí se do studia chemie, fyziky a matematiky. Nakonec se jim podaří sestrojit překvapivě funkční rakety. Ty nepředstavují jen jakousi lepší hračku, ale pokud uspějí na mezistátní soutěži mladých techniků, i únik z rodiště. V cestě za splněním snu Homerovi stojí nepochopení otce. Přesto se nevzdává a snaží se naplnit svoji vizi.
