In this WWII adventure, a new commanding officer is sent to tighten the discipline of a group of navy underwater demolition experts, aka "Frogmen." Replacing a popular officer whom the men idolized, the new commander at first wins few friends with his strict style. He finally proves himself by risking his own life to disarm a live torpedo, and then helps the men prepare for the bigger mission of sabotaging a Japanese submarine base. The film was directed by Lloyd Bacon and stars Richard Widmark, Dana Andrews and Gary Merrill.
The new commander of a Navy Underwater Demolition Team--nicknamed "Frogmen"--must earn the respect of the men in his unit, who are still grieving over the death of their former commander and resentful of the new one.

WWII Navy SeALsIf you have an interest in the Underwater Demolition Teams (UDT) from WWII this movie is a little gem. The UDT was the precursor to todays Navy SeALs. BUD/S, the school SeALs go through to become SeALs, stands for Basic Underwater Demolition (slash) SeAL school and was the school both UDT and SeALs went through before the early 90's where the SeALs absorbed the UDT. But the term Frogmen/UDT is yesterdays name for todays Navy SeALs...So if you want to see WWII SeALs it's a cool movie. Though a bit short and could have used more character development. But it's a 50's WWII movie...This kind of movie would be awesome today if a Steven Spielberg type could re-make it..!!!.Score: 5/5
Frogmen into SeALSMy father was a frogman at the end of WW II and into the 1950's. Having grown up hearing a lot of dive stories from him, I'm always curious to see films that portrays divers or things nautical and military. I think this film shows very well what a unique group these guys were and, I mean, jumping into the ink in the dark with nothing but swim trunks, a mask and maybe a knife, takes guts. The underwater shots are good, I thought for a film of this vintage. But you do have to wade through the establishing of what the tension of the film will be: will the men ever accept Richard Widmark as their new leader after recently loosing their much revered commander. The plot is a bit thin and as the previous reviewer points out, some character development would have been nice. I'm a Jeffery Hunter fan and it was nice to see him in one of the few films of his tragically short career. The film points out how new the UDT was to the Navy as a fighting force. When you think of the size of the tanks these guys were using, let alone the other technology that was still being figured out (wet suits, depth tables, mixing air, etc) it is amazing to see and to think about what these guys were swimming into and trying to accomplish. I gave it four stars for my father's sake; it is wonderful that a film was made about the UDT. Hopefully someday an even better one will be made..Score: 4/5
